Programme Profile

The course aims to train, both at theoretical and applicative levels, a professional able to manage the whole sequence involved in the complex multidisciplinary process that, starting from the molecular design, leads to the production, formulation and quality control of drugs and health-related products, and to carry out health promotion activities including a multidisciplinary approach. Graduates will acquire the skills for her/him to be hired as professional pharmacist and chemist.

Key Learning Outcomes

This course is devoted to deliver a multidisciplinary knowledge, spanning complex and heterogeneous sectors such as, in particular:
- synthetic and analytical medicinal chemistry, with emphasis on structure-activity relationships, design and synthesis of organic compounds with bio-pharmacological properties, qualitative and quantitative analyses of substances with biological and toxicological activities, as well as of drugs and their metabolites, and of health-related products;
- biochemical-pharmacological disciplines, with a particular focus on the theoretical and applicative aspects needed for the design, development, production and evaluation of the activities of the drugs and health-related products;
- pharmaceutical technologies applied to the galenical development of drugs and health-related products, as well as to the characterization, registration, production, quality control and assurance of pharmaceutical formulations, medical products and cosmetics at the industrial level.

Occupational Profile/s of Graduates

Professional perspectives in the pharma-world and in the health promotion activities include: design, research and development, biological analysis of drugs and health-related products; qualitative and quantitative analyses of substances with biological and toxicological activities; production, formulation, quality control, patenting, regulation, authorization, promotion, distribution and marketing of drugs and health-related products; management of laboratories.
Graduates will be able to exercise their professional activities at: chemical-pharmaceutical, biotechnological, food and cosmetic companies; CRO (Contract Research Organization); healthcare services companies; pharmacies; public and private laboratories of chemical-toxicological, environmental and biochemical clinical analysis; companies operating in environmental toxicology; regulatory agencies, schools, universities and other public/private research organizations.

Access to further study

The Laurea Magistrale degree in PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY AND TECHNOLOGY allows the graduate to compete for entry into a Third Cycle programme/doctoral school.

Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading

Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**. Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).

**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.

Requirements (regulations) to obtain the qualification

The final exam, to which 30 ECTS are allocated, concernes a dissertation of a thesis, which is the result of research activities on a topic linked to the subject area mentioned above.
