General Information
Programme Profile
The main aim of the First Degree Course is to prepare graduate scholars able to move in the field of Media and Communication with an exhaustive preparation in the humanities, with historical and critical consciousness and with updated methodological approaches and skill in the different branches of knowledge. It will be possible to choose between two courses: one more focused on Communication, the other more focused on Visual and Performing Arts. Both courses share common basis of knowledge with a philosophical, psychological, pedagogical, aesthetic and ethical orientation and with classes concerning arts and media, visual and audiovisual languages, theatre and music, also with courses more definitely professionalizing, with a workshop approach.
Key Learning Outcomes
The course is divided into two classes. The class L-3 Disciplines of visual arts, music, entertainment and fashion designed to provide advanced skills and knowledge to: working within the organization of communication and cultural industries; television and the mass media; entertainment in its various aspects, from product concept to its realization. And the class L-20, Communication Sciences designed to provide advanced skills and knowledge to work within the public and private organizations, national and international, as: communication officers and relations with the public; experts of multimedia; professionals in publishing companies and advertising agencies.
Occupational Profile/s of Graduates
The degree course aims to train professionals who are capable of adapting themselves not passive, but critical, dynamic and versatile, the evolution of cultural and technological processes and specific requirements of the world of work, such as:
- Operator in the field of music production, theater, film, television, radio and multimedia;
- Author and consultant of products and programs in the field of information, publishing and music production, theater, film, television and multimedia;
- Critic and publicist;
- Creator and organizer of cultural events promoted by public and private entities;
- Creator and organizer, for public and private companies, projects of communication and information, as well as innovative, creative and multimedia;
- Management and consulting services for collection and archives specializing in the field of real music, theater (including the field of Costume and Fashion), cinematographic and audiovisual services;
- Author of projects and products (from paper to multimedia) in the public interest in the social, historical, artistic and cultural heritage.
Access to further study
The Laurea Degree in SCIENCES OF COMMUNICATION AND PERFORMING ARTS normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.
Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading
Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**.
Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).
**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.
