General Information

Programme Profile

The Course is aimed at providing the basic scientific Education to face the second Level Degree (Masters in Civil and Building Engineering). Moreover, the Course is intended for undergraduate training in problem solving and decision making in the field of Civil & Building Engineering (Building Constructions, Roads, Geotechnical and Hydraulic Constructions, Urban Planning, Environmental Sustenaibility of Buildings etc.). The course consists of two curricula: a) civil-environmental engineering; b) building engineering. The two curricula have differences for 15 ECTS at the second year and 24 ECTS at the third year. Practical placement for 6 to 12 ECTS is possible at the University Laboratories or Private Companies or Technical Offices of the Public Administration.

Key Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Programma will be able to demonstrate:
(a) Knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as necessary tools for solving technical - scientific problems of the Civil & Building Engineer profession;
(b) Deep Knowledge of typical Civil & Building Engineering subjects (Structural Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnics, Transportation Engineering, Hydraulics, Energetic % Acoustic design of Buildings);
(c) Knowledge of Regulations in the field of Civil/Building Engineering and Urban Planning, as well as of the necessary tools to evaluate and compare construction or retrofitting and maintainance costs
(d) Basic knowledge of other european languages
(e) Basic knowledge of Computer Science
(f) Knowledge of other engineering subjects (Electrical Engineering, Technical Physics).
(g) Ability to design simple and repetitive structures or infrastructures including the safety measures during construction works.
(h) Awareness of a sustainable design of buildings and infrastructures

Occupational Profile/s of Graduates

Graduates in Civil – Environmental & Building Engineering can find employment in the Technical Staff of the Public Administration, Construction Industry (buildings, roads, geotechnical and hydraulic constructions) or as Professional (if certified) as far as simple and repetitive design activities are concerned.
Among the possible activities as practising engineer, it is worthwhile to remember the design and control of safety measures during construction works, the care of monitoring systems and investigation campaigns, the energetic certification of buildings.

Access to further study

The Laurea Degree in CIVIL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND BUILDING ENGINEERING normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.

Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading

Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**. Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).

**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.

Requirements (regulations) to obtain the qualification

The student is asked to prepare a written Report (3 ECTS), including drawing if necessary, on a given topic of the Civil and Building Engineering Area. The Report is prepared autonomously by the student under the supervision of one or more among the profe
