General Information

Programme Profile

The graduates are health professional belonging to the nurse and obstetrician area. Their professional activity is based on care, prevention, rehabilitation and protection of people. Their principal activities are prevention of diseases, assistance of patients and invalid of every age. Moreover they plain, manage, evaluate the nursing aid intervention and supervisor the prescribed drug therapy by the physicians. The nurses work in collaboration with the physician and with multidisciplinary equipe. Their professional activity can be done in public, private health services, and as home care. Their functions are related to professional rules other than specific deontological code using methodological planning for the care in developmental, adult and geriatric age. The graduates acquired a preparation on basic disciplines in order to better understanding the physiological and pathological processes. Their professional activity is related to therapy, prevention and care and it has to be performed integrated to the other professional activities.

Key Learning Outcomes

Graduates of nursing must be able to demonstrate:
- Advanced knowledge of biomedical sciences for the understanding of physiological and pathological processes connected with the state of health and illness of people in various stages of life;
- Basic knowledge of psycho-social sciences and humanities for the understanding of normal and pathological relationship dynamics and reactions of defense or adaptation of people to
situations of psychological distress, social and physical suffering;
- Advanced knowledge of general nursing and clinical understanding of the fields of nursing intervention, the clinical method, techniques of intervention and the evidence available to guide decision-making;
- Basic knowledge of science ethical, legal and sociological understanding of the organizational complexity of the healthcare system, the importance and usefulness to act in accordance with
regulations and directives and respect for human values and ethical dilemmas;
- Advanced knowledge of hygiene and preventive sciences for understanding the determinants of health, risk factors, prevention strategies to promote the safety of health workers and users;
- knowledge of language skills with special emphasis on the English language for the understanding of the scientific literature both in print and online.

Occupational Profile/s of Graduates

Graduates deal with the identification of health needs of the person and the community, identify nursing needs, manage and evaluate nursing care intervention, ensure the correct application of diagnosis and therapy.
Nursing Graduates may find employment in health care facilities and social care public or private, and as free professional employees.
In particular, the employment opportunities are identified
- In hospitals in all operating units of inpatient and outpatient services;
- The territorial and hospital emergency services;
- Structures for post-acute, long-term care, assisted nursing, rehabilitation centers, hospices;
- In local health services, home care and outpatient;
- In services for prevention and public health.

Access to further study

The Laurea Degree in NURSING normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.

Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading

Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, comment of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer on the basis of performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. Main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**. Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of examination and final grades among students of each degree programme, in order to facilitate comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).

**The exam sessions are organised in sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The student chooses which of the appelli he or she wishes to respond to. In most cases it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.
