The First Level Degree Programme in Energy Engineering has the objective of preparing student with a methodological background in the field of energy and technical and scientifics topics related which allows to pursue several professional careers in the fields of energy engineering, related to energy production, energy systems and appratuses construction and optimization, energy distibution both in the field of fossil fuel based energy conversion and in Renewable Energy. The two main cultural area that are developed are those related to Applied Thermodynamics and Energy Systems Engineeing and Electric Engineering and Electric power system Engineering.
The Degree Programme has during the third year two differet pathways: Energy Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Graduation permits the direct access to the second level Degree Programme in Ingegneria Energetica and "Ingegneria Eletrica".
Key Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the First Cycle Degree Programme in Energy Engineering are expected to:
- acquire some proficiency with the mathematical and physical methodologies to model and analyse systems and energy systems;
- be able to operate with the common methodological instrument of energy engineering;
- have methodological knowledge of analyzing heat and mass flow rate in energy systems of various complexity and based on various energy input (Renewable energies and Fossil Fuels);
- have some basic knowledge of computing tools related to thermal and fluid dynamic analysis of energy systems;
- have basic and methodological tools related to electrical and thermal energy devices and apparatuses;
- have some ability in organizing scientific and technical research;
- have some ability to identify the relevant scientific literature, bibliography and sources to address a state of the art in some specific energetic fields;
- have basic abilities for communication in written form some technical elements related to specific energy fields.
Occupational Profile/s of Graduates
Most of the graduates carry on their studies onto the second level degree in "Ingegneria Energetica" or "Ingegneria Elettrica". The first level graduates who opt to leave their study due to the methodological characterization of the studies can be able to carry out various activities for public and private istitutions.
In particular they can find occupation in public and private industry, in public institutions or in research institutes involved in the sector of Renewable Energy Enginering. They may set up their own professional service after a further specific examination (Esame di Stato).
Access to further study
The Laurea Degree in ENERGY ENGINEERING normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.
Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading
Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, comment of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer on the basis of performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. Main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**. Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of examination and final grades among students of each degree programme, in order to facilitate comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).
**The exam sessions are organised in sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The student chooses which of the appelli he or she wishes to respond to. In most cases it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.
Requirements (regulations) to obtain the qualification
The final exam, to which 3 ECTS credits are allocated, foresees the preparation and discussion of a written text on a specific topic and must show that the candidate has acquired the basic knowledge in the field of energy engineering, the ability to ident
