General Information
Programme Profile
The Undergraduate Course in Human Sciences aims to form graduates with basic knowledge base in the disciplines of the humanities from ancient times to today, trying to combine the practical knowledge (oral and written) of the national language in the context of contemporary European culture. A solid basic education, methodological and historical, in the humanities, with direct knowledge of the sources and ability to read original texts, as indicated by several international experiences, is the basis on which they can engage new skills. The humanities are interpreted according to the cultural and professional needs of our time and much enriched by the study of contemporary Europe and extraeuropean languages and literatures, as the acquisition of the leading IT and telecommunication tools. Particular attention is given to the practice of Italian language oral and written, so to provide writing and communication skilld valuable by institutions and public and private entities as the basis of impotant professionalism in today's society. New possibilities of professional commitment are also favored by the growing interest in Italian in the context of global communication and information.
The Undergraduates Course in Humanities is a three years and is characterized by a unique structure based on lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. It is divided into five curricula: ancient, comparative, linguistic, modern Orientalism.
Key Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the First Cycle Degree Programme in Humanities will be able to demonstrate:
- Critical understanding of the modern and ancient literary texts.
- Knowledge of italian and foreign literatures.
- Ability to identify the relevant scientific literature, bibliography and sources to approach a literary, linguistic and comparative question.
- Ability to communicate research results in various ways according to the target audience in cultural context.
- Knowledge of and ability to use the main tools of other humanistic sciences.
- Solid knowledge of the general lines of italian and foreign literatures.
- More specialised knowledge of one broad period of literature (Ancient, Medieval, Modern/Contemporary)
- Ability to communicate In at least one language of the EU in addition to Italian(English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese).
Occupational Profile/s of Graduates
The course is aimed at providing the skills necessary to enter the graduate degree and specialized training in the teaching of the humanities, in any school level. The three-year degree also provides access to all public competitions that require the possession of such a qualification. In addition, extensive training in humanistic culture aimed at improving management skills of interpersonal relationships, and a specific curricular practice of the most varied written and oral textuality to provide a more solid foundation and the necessary flexibility for writing activities and communications which are relevant in journalism, publishing, advertising and, more generally, public and private working areas.
Access to further study
The Laurea Degree in CLASSICAL AND MODERN PHILOLOGIES normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.
Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading
Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**.
Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).
**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.
