General Information
Programme Profile
The Degree Programme in Foreign Languages and Literatures has the
objective of providing students with theoretical and practical knowledge
of foreign languages, as well as the ability to carry out linguistic and
literary research. From a professional point of view, students are
expected to reach a B2-C1 level in oral and written competence of two
foreign Languages (English, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian,
Russian, Spanish) and a B1 level in a third Language. A special competence
in Italian language, literature and culture is also required, in addition
to good skills in interlinguistic and intercultural mediation. The
Programme is articulated into 3 curricula: a) Literary, b) Linguistic and
c) Artistic. Learning is based on cycles of lectures, seminars, workshops
and laboratories. The students also have the opportunity to attend special
lectures, conferences and meetings in foreign languages.
Key Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the First Cycle Degree Programme in Foreign Languages and
Literatures will be able to demonstrate:
- A good competence in Italian language and literary culture;
- A good knowledge of theoretical fundamentals of linguistics;
- A good knowledge of theoretical aspects of two foreign languages - A
good knowledge of the main elements concerning the history of
literature of two foreign cultures
- Ability to use and communicate in two foreign languages for practical
purposes
- Ability to use and communicate in two foreign languages in literary and
linguistic research,
- Knowledge of and ability to use the main tools of literary and
historical research
- Basic ICT abilities for communication, retrieval and elaboration of
texts and data
Occupational Profile/s of Graduates
Having acquired professional competence in at least two foreign languages
and literatures, graduates in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Degree
Programme will be able to perform the following activities in Italy and
abroad:
1) executive professions in offices (Istat 4): staff for international
communications, segretarial work and activities related to the collection,
control, conservation and retrieval of documentation;
2) commercial and service professions (Istat 5): staff for recreational
and cultural services (5.4.2);
3) technical professions for public services and citizens (Istat 3.4):
staff for reception services (3.4.1.1); organization of fairs, conferences
and cultural events (3.4.1.2); tourism activities (3.4.1.3); travel agents
(3.4.1.4); specialized guides (3.4.1.5); advertising and public relations
(3.3.3.6)
Access to further study
The Laurea Degree in FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.
Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading
Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**.
Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).
**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.

The final exam, to which 6 ECTS credits are allocated, foresees the
preparation and discussion of a written text of about 80,000 characters,
which must show that the candidate has acquired the basic knowledge of
