Programme Profile

The Teclnician in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (Bachelor Degree) cooperates in the evaluation of psychiatric disorders, analyzes evolutive needs and familial and socio-environmental settings, and collaborates to the identification of specific therapeutic protocols aimed to the rescue of the patient’s rehabilitation. Moreover, he promotes the abilitation/rehabilitation to self care and inter-personal relations, and if possible, to the work; he is operative in the primary prevention in order to promote the management of the critical conditions, preventing the full development of the disease; he attends to the reintegration of the subjects within the community, collaborates to the evaluation of the results of the abilitation and rehabilitation protocol; he contributes to the formation and retraining of the supporting personnel. He operates in public and private health services.
In particular, the professional learning is integrated by a practical activity consisting of clinical stages corresponding to at least 60 CFU, under the supervision of a tutor, according to the European normative, where requested. Moreover knowledge of a foreign language also is requested.

Key Learning Outcomes

Graduates in Techniques of Psychiatric Rehabilitation will be able to demonstrate:
-knowledge of biomedical and clinical sciences for the understanding of physiological and pathological processes connected with the state of health and illness of people in various stages of life; neuropsychiatric sciences for the understanding of mental processes and events in different life periods;
- basic knowledge of the general mechanisms of cultural processes including historical and cultural concepts of normality, health, disease, disability, and handicap, and
the historical evolution of care, treatment and rehabilitation;
- knowledge of psycho-social sciences and humanities for the understanding of normal and pathological relationship dynamics and reactions of defense or adaptation people to
psychicopathological and social situations;
- advanced knowledge of fundamental elements of psychic functions, of psychopathological phenomena and psychiatric symptomatology;
- Knowledge of notions concerning the normal and pathological development of children clinical forms and parent-child relationship dynamics; basic understanding of the variables that currently affect health needs of population (aging, immigration, increased maladjustment in adolescence, use and abuse of substances);
- Knowledge of the foundations of psychiatric rehabilitation agreements in the area of clinical psychiatry and social concepts of mental health, psychopathology, organization of psychiatric services,
characteristics of the therapeutic relationship;
- basic knowledge of psychology and psychotherapy relevant to psychiatric rehabilitation, with specific reference to the main currents of thought of both psychological and psychotherapeutic schools, the different approaches of individual therapy, group and family, main elements of psychodiagnostic;
- Understanding of ethical, legal and sociological understanding of the organizational complexity of the healthcare system, the importance and usefulness to

Access to further study

The Laurea Degree in PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION TECHNIQUES normally gives direct access to the corresponding Second Cycle degree programme. It also gives access to some other Second Cycle degree programmes, in which case extra work may be necessary for admission.

Assessment methods, examination regulations, and grading

Assessment is normally by means of an oral or written examination; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other elements (participation in discussion, written or oral reports, commentary of texts etc. ) are foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles.
The grading system for the course units consists of 30 possible points, plus 'lode' (cum laude) in case of excellence. Marks are given by the lecturer based on the performance as ascertained in a public examination by a board of at least two teachers. The main exam sessions are held in June/July; September; and January; students may resit exams**. Actual grading curves differ in different degree programmes. The University of Pisa provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution, of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme, in order to facilitate the comparison with other grading systems. ---> Link to ECTS Grading Table
An overall mark is given on the occasion of the 'Final Exam', when a written research text is presented and discussed. The final overall mark is calculated based on the results of the marks obtained in the single course units and the final exam, and is based on 110 possible points, with the possible further mention of honours ("lode" or cum laude).

**The exam sessions are organised into sessions (the dates vary according to the Department and are published in the Department's academic calendar). In each session there are a certain number of 'appelli' [calls], or dates on which the examination for each course unit may be taken. The 'appelli' are fixed by the teacher. The students choose which of the appelli they wish to respond to. In most cases, it is obligatory to sign up before the specified date.
