Al termine del corso lo studente dovrà aver acquisito la conoscenza delle linee essenziali della storia letteraria latina, con particolare riferimento a generi letterari, aree geografiche di produzione letteraria, istituzioni e pratiche culturali.
Students successfully completing the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main authors and texts of ancient Latin literature, with particular reference to its literary genres and the geographical areas of literary production, as well as some knowledge of ancient cultural institutions.
La verifica delle conoscenze sarà oggetto della valutazione in sede di esame orale.
During the oral exam students will be tested on their knowledge of Latin literature and cultural history of the Roman world.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di esporre con sufficiente disinvoltura le principali caratteristiche della cultura letteraria romana, effettuando collegamenti fra generi, autori e forme della produzione scritta della civiltà romana.
At the end of the course, the student will know the principal outlines of Latin literary culture. S/he will also be able to place authors in their respective literary genres, and will be able to identify different forms of written production in ancient Roman world.
Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di rispondere con chiarezza ed esaustività a quesiti riguardanti le principali caratteristiche della cultura letteraria romana, effettuando collegamenti fra generi, autori e forme della produzione scritta della civiltà romana.
Students will be expected to give clear and thorough answers to questions about the main features of Latin literature and its contexts of production, as well as to make links between authors, literary genres and the different forms of written production in ancient Roman world.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e/o sviluppare sensibilità alle problematiche letterarie, culturali e latamente storiche che si riscontrano nello sviluppo della cultura romana.
Students will develop some awareness and competence of the interpretive, critical, literary and historical problems pertinent to the study of Roman world in a diachronic perspective.

Il corso si propone di affrontare i principali problemi del romanzo antico, in particolare nel mondo latino. Saranno letti passi scelti da due dei testi più rappresentativi del genere letterario:
A queste letture è da aggiungere la conoscenza dell'intera storia della letteratura latina dalle origini alla tarda antichità, da preparare su un manuale in uso nei licei (per es. G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier, più volte ristampato).
The main purpose of the course is to analyse the ancient Roman novel and its main features as a literary genre. We will read and comment selected passages from the most famous novels in Latin:
In addition to these texts, students must have a detailed knowledge of the whole history of Latin literature, from its origins to Late Antiquity, as it is presented in the most common textbooks (e.g. G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier, available in different editions).
Si consiglia di attenersi il più possibile alle indicazioni bibliografiche fornite: benché le edizioni disponibili in lingua italiana siano numerose, si sono segnalate le traduzioni che saranno utilizzate nel corso delle lezioni frontali, in quanto più adatte agli scopi del corso.
Altri testi di interesse saranno segnalati nel corso delle lezioni; qualora essi non siano disponibili in edizioni in commercio e in traduzione italiana, saranno forniti adeguati supporti.
The above mentioned edition are the most suitable to the purposes of the course, and these are the Italian translations which will be used during the lessons.
Further bibliography, if necessary, will be provided during the lectures; if the suggested books and/or articles are not available for sale, a copy will be provided in electronic format.
