Il corso si propone l'obiettivo di introdurre alla moderna teoria della catalogazione facendo conoscere la struttura e gli scopi del catalogo e illustrando, in sintesi, i principi e gli standard di catalogazione vigenti con particolare riferimento alle Regole italiane di catalogazione (REICAT).
Durante le lezioni si farà riferimento anche al materiale digitale, al suo trattamento catalografico e alle problematiche legate alla sua gestione. Sono previste anche alcune esercitazioni pratiche.
Le ultime lezioni saranno dedicate a qualche accenno di teoria dell'indicizzazione e ai sistemi più usati di soggettazione e classificazione.

Le conoscenze acquisite verranno verificate durante la prova orale con la discussione dei casi affrontati nella prova pratica e di altri temi esaminati all’interno del corso o emersi dallo studio dei testi indicati.
The assessment of knowledge will be carried out through an oral exam with the discussion of the cases dealt with in the practical test and other topics examined within the course or emerged from the study of the indicated texts.

Le capacità acquisite verranno verificate tramite l’applicazione delle conoscenze alla prova pratica (quesiti a risposta multipla ed aperta e un caso catalografico da svolgere secondo le REICAT).
The acquired skills will be verified through the application of knowledge to the practical test (multiple choice and open questions and a cataloging case to be performed according to the REICAT).

Metadati e catalogo. Le funzioni del catalogo, i tipi di cataloghi, le loro interfacce pubbliche (OPAC), i discovery tools. Le Regole italiane di catalogazione (REICAT). La descrizione bibliografica. La catalogazione per autori. Il controllo di autorità. L'indicizzazione per soggetto: soggettazione alfabetica (con il thesaurus del Nuovo Soggettario) e Classificazione decimale Dewey. Le tendenze attuali nel campo della catalogazione.
The course aims to introduce the modern cataloging theory, making known the structure and purposes of the catalog and illustrating, in summary, the principles and standards of cataloging in force with particular reference to the Italian Rules of Cataloging (REICAT).
During the lessons we will also refer to the digital material, to its cataloging treatment and to the problems related to its management. There are also some practical exercises.
The last lessons will be devoted to some reference to the theory of indexation and to the most used systems of subjecting and classification.

Course contents and exam requirements are the same for both attending students and non-attenders. Due to the theoretical and technical character of the course, it is suggested, however, to contact the teacher.
L’esame consiste in una prova pratica (quesiti a risposta multipla ed aperta e un caso catalografico da svolgere secondo le REICAT) e in una prova orale.
