The assessment of knowledge will take placethanks to 1) an in itinere test that will have as its object literary history (ie the handbook,I testi, le immagini, le culture, except fromanthologized texts) and linguistic skills in Italian; 2) an oral exam, which will focus on anthologized texts in the manual, on the course, on the essays in the programme

Lo studente sarà capace di analizzare i testi del programma, di contestualizzarli, di riflettere sulle principali questioni della storia della letteratura italiana contemporanea. Inoltre, svilupperà le sue competenze linguistiche sull'italiano, particolarmente utili in un corso di studi in lingue.
At the end of the course:
The student will be able to analyze the texts in the programme, to contextualize them, to reflect on the main issues of the history of contemporary Italian literature. In addition, s/he will develop his/her linguistic skills in Italian, which are particularly useful in a language course.
Il corso sarà dedicato in larga parte all'analisi dei testi, con la partecipazione degli studenti. Gli studenti saranno stimolati alla discussione sull'interpretazione e sulla contestualizzazione.
The course will be mainly devoted to the analysis of texts, with the participation of the students. Students will be stimulated for discussionon interpretation and contextualization.
Lo studente svilupperà la sua sensibilità nell'analisi e nell'interpretazione dei testi e nella riflessione sui principali problemi di teoria e storia della letteratura italiana del Novecento. Inoltre, lo studente potrà riflettere sulla specificità dell'identità nazionale italiana
The student will develop his/her own sensitivity in the analysis and interpretation of the texts and in the reflection on the main problems of theory and history of the Italian literature in the twentieth
century. Furthermore, the student will be able to reflect on the specificity of the Italian national identity.

Argomento del corso:
L’Italia è stata, in una buona misura, un’invenzione letteraria. Questo corso individua il ruolo che scrittori e intellettuali italiani hanno avuto nella definizione dell’identità e del carattere nazionale. Partendo dai primi decenni dell'Ottocento (e in particolare da Leopardi e da Manzoni), il corso si soffermerà su alcune figure di spicco dell’età risorgimentale e dell’Italia unita che, da Verdi a De Amicis, hanno pesato nell’affermazione di ideologie, programmi, cliché. Quindi, segnalerà come, dopo la caduta del fascismo e con l’avvento della Repubblica, gli intellettuali cessino di essere produttori di un’ideologia nazionale, rinunciando all’idea di patria e divenendo critici del costume nazionale.
Italiani, Italiane. Identity and national character in the pre- and post-unification Italy
Italy has ben to a large extent a literary invention. This course’s goal is to highlight the role played by writers and intellectuals in defining national identity and character. Starting from early 19th century authors such as Leopardi and Manzoni, the course will deal with some of the leading literary figures of Risorgimento and Unified Italy, from Verdi to De Amicis, who had some bearings on the affirmation of ideologies, programmes and clichés. After this preamble, the course will investigate how, after the fall of Fascism and the advent of the first Republic, intellectuals ceased to be the fabricators of national ideologies, abdicating the idea of homeland, becoming the prominent adversaries of national manners.Testi modulo unico:

L'esame è composto da:
una prova in itinere costituita da un questionario di 60 domande, a risposta chiusa (vero o falso) e un breve testo per saggiare le competenze in italiano;
un colloquio orale.
