Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of ancient philosophy in its historical development. He or she will be able to develop a critical philosophical approach to ancient texts, and will have demonstrated the ability to analyze philosophical arguments from a theoretical point of view, at the same time placing them into their historical context.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Ability of analyzing philosophical arguments, placing them in thier historical context

Oral report; assessment during the course; written questionnaire

Prerequisites

Sufficient knowledge of the history of ancient philosophy. Knowledge of ancient greek is welcome, but not required.

Teaching methods

Book Lambda of Aristotle's Metaphysics will be read and commented during the course.

The first part of the course will consist in lectures given by the teacher; a workshop will follow, which envisages reports given by the participants on subjects to be agreed with the teacher.

The following texts make up the program of the exam:

1) Book Lambda, in E. Berti. Aristotele. Metafisica, Biblioteca Filosofica Laterza, Introduzione, traduzione e note di E.Berti, Roma-Bari 2017, pp. 500-549

2) P. L. Donini. La Metafisica di Aristotele. Introduzione alla lettura, Carocci, Roma 2007 

3) one among the Essays in Aristotle's Metaphysics Lambda, edited by Michael Frede and David Charles.Oxford, Clarendon Press; New York, Oxford University Press, 2000.

Materials employed duriing the course will be available at the Copisteria Universitaria, via S. Simone, Pisa.

 Students who never achieved credits in Ancient philosophy will replace the points 2 and 3 of the program with:
