The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to Materials Science and Engineering. In the course, he or she will acquire knowledge on structure and properties of metallic and non metallic materials for structural applications and will be able to select the most suitable material for specified applications. In the second part, the course approaches the study of the structure and properties of metallic materials (carbon and stainless steels, cast irons, ligth metals, titanium alloys, copper alloys, superalloys), as well as main topics of physical metallurgy, phase transformations and failure mechanisms of metals (mechanical and corrosive). Lastly, the course focuses on the structure and properties of polimeric, ceramics and composite materials.
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.
Methods:
Delivery: face to face
Attendance: Not mandatory
Learning activities:
Teaching methods:
The course provides notions on the main materials components, as well as the technologic characteristics of metals, glass, ceramics and polymer The course also approaches the main issues related to state diagram, structural transformation, princiof heat treatments. Lastly, some issues related to the basic mechanical properties, tensile and hardness tests, concept of fatigue and creep and corrosion properties of most common metals.
Mandatory: Appunti di scienza ed ingegneria dei materiali by Valentini, De Sanctis and Lovicu Recommended reading includes the following works: Material Sciience and Engineering by Callister
