Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student will learn the basic approaches of:

- the main techniques for planting and management of ornamental trees;

- methods and instruments for tree risk assessment.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Seminars done by students will test the level of acquired outcomes.

Skills

The student acquires mastery on the ability to identify the appropriate management techniques of trees in urban areas and a reliable and accurate method for tree risk assessment

Assessment criteria of skills

Assessment lessons and practical exercitations will test the student’s ability to:

- understand the adaptability of woody plants to the urban environmental conditions and the main techniques for management ornamental trees;

- identify the methods and instruments for the assessment of tree risk assessment.

Behaviors

The students acquire and develop the ability to pointed the main problems out in relation to the management of woody species in urban environments

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Exercitations aim at the evaluation of student’s behaviours in relation to question posed by the Professor.

Prerequisites

Principles of general arboriculture and plant patology are necessary

Teaching methods

Slides will be utilized for room lessons and provided to students. Exercitations consist on visits to parks, private and public associations involved to the management of green areas in urban environment.

E-learning website is utilized to spread both the teaching material provided during classroom lessons and further material required by students. Meetings with students are possible when required by student themselves beside the availability of Professor to provide clarifications by email.

Syllabus

Role, functions and benefits of urban green. Trees and urban environment: main causes of stress on woody plants in human-populated areas; main causes of failure of common tree species; management in urban environment.

Implanting and managements of woody species in urban environment. Tree compartmentalization (CODIT), tree risk assessment; visual method; tree body language; instrumental measurements; increment borer; sonic tomography; penetrometer; failure risk classification.

All the slides (in pptx format) which will be discussed during the formal lessons are always available in the e-learning web site.

Assessment methods

Final assessment consists in discussion of a project related to a case study in a well-defined urban context.
