Verrano fornite allo studente le conoscenze necessarie per una piena comprensione di come la filosofia contemporanea da una parte, e le neuroscienze dall'altra, stiano affrontando lo studio di percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio. Il corso prevede un uso intenso di articoli originali di neuroscienze. Sono inoltre previste lezioni sperimentali in cui gli studenti replicheranno attivamente alcuni degli esperimenti descritti nei suddetti articoli.
The student will be provided with the necessary knowledge for a full understanding of how contemporary philosophy, on the one hand, and neuroscience on the other, are dealing with the study of perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will. The course includes an intensive use of original neuroscience articles. Experimental lessons are also planned in which the students will actively replicate some of the experiments described in the aforementioned articles.
Esame orale finale in cui lo studente dovrà dimostrare la conoscenza degli argomenti trattati nel corso e la capacità di discuterli utilizzando la terminologia appropriata.
Final oral exam in which the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered in the course and the ability to discuss them using the appropriate terminology.
Al termine del corso lo studente
1) avra’ un quadro generale delle teorie filosofiche contemporanee riguardanti percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio;
2) avra’ acquisito le conoscenze necessarie per una analisi critica della letteratura scientifica di neuroscienze riguardante percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio;
3) avra' acquisito delle conoscenze preliminari sull'acquisizione di dati sperimentali psicofisici e sul loro trattamento statistico.
At the end of the course the student
1) will have a general picture of contemporary philosophical theories concerning perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will;
2) will have acquired the necessary knowledge for a critical analysis of the scientific literature of neuroscience concerning perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will;
3) will have acquired preliminary knowledge on the acquisition of experimental psychophysical data and on their statistical handling.
Aver seguito il corso "Elementi di biologia e neuroscienze" della laurea triennale oppure conoscenze di base di neuroscienze. Conoscenze di base verranno comunque fornite durante il corso.
Basic knowledge of neuroscience or having followed the course "Elements of biology and neuroscience" of the three-year degree. Some basic knowledge will still be provided during the course.
Il corso si svolge mediante lezioni frontali con l'ausilio di slide e con articoli scientifici.
Sono inoltre previste alcune lezioni sperimentali in cui gli studenti replicheranno attivamente alcuni esperimenti di psicofisica, con relativa acquisizione dati e analisi statistica.
Alcune lezioni potranno essere svolte in compresenza con altri docenti del dipartimento.
Il docente fa inoltre presente di essere A DISPOSIZIONE per ogni SPIEGAZIONE SUPPLEMENTARE riguardo agli argomenti del corso e all'esame. Lo studente che non ha capito bene un argomento, che desidera una spiegazione su una diapositiva, ecc. ecc., può telefonare al docente (050 53 1997 o 346 66 74 704) tutti i giorni, festivi INCLUSI, fino alle 23:00.
Durante il corso e' inoltre previsto il ricevimento (mercoledì pomeriggio, subito dopo la lezione).
The course takes place through lectures with the help of slides and scientific articles.
Some experimental lessons are also planned in which the students will actively replicate some psychophysical experiments, with relative data acquisition and statistical analysis.
Some lessons can be carried out with the presence of other teachers of the department.
The teacher points out to be at disposal of students for additional explanations concerning the course and the exam topics. The student who did not understand a topic, who wants an explanation on a slide, etc. etc., can phone to the teacher (050-531997 or 346-6674704) every day, holidays INCLUDED, until 23:00.
During the course, office hours are available (wednesday afternoon, immediately after class).
Argomento del corso di quest'anno: coscienza, attenzione, percezioni e libero arbitrio.
Ecco i contenuti principali del corso.
1) Percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio nella filosofia contemporanea (Chalmers, Dennet, Sellars, Searle, Davidson, ecc.).
2) Percezioni, attenzione, coscienza e libero arbitrio nelle neuroscienze (metodi di studio in neuroscienze, lettura e analisi critica di articoli di esperimenti di neuroscienze).
3) Laboratorio in classe, ovvero replica in classe, da parte degli studenti, di alcuni esperimenti di neuroscienze, con relativa acquisizione dati e analisi statistica.
Subject of this year's course: consciousness, attention, and perceptions.
Here are the main contents of the course.
1) Perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will in contemporary philosophy (Chalmers, Dennet, Sellars, Searle, Davidson, etc.).
2) Perceptions, attention, consciousness and free will in neuroscience (methods in neuroscience, reading and critical analysis of articles of neuroscience experiments).
3) Laboratory in the classroom (replication by students of some neuroscience experiments, with related data acquisition and statistical analysis).

For the preparation of the exam it is important to have the material used for the lessons during the course. To get the link from which to download said material, students have to send an email to the teacher (mario.pirchio@sns.it).
