THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD IN THE SECOND SEMESTER AND ONLY IN ENGLISH. It is included in the programme of the double-degree "Political Consulting and International relations" but it is open to students of the LM 52 'International Studies' and to all students who are interested in EU law.

The course is designed for students who have never studied EU law and have a B2 level of English.

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to know what are the EU institutions and how they operate; how the EU interacts with other subjects of international law in the wider international community; how EU law and international law co-exist. Special emphasis will be placed on the external aspects of the EU human right policy and on the EU relations with its neighbours as well as 'neighbours of neighbours'.

The Syllabus will be made available to the students through the teachning platform on the first day of class.

Knowledge

THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD in ENGLISH ONLY. 

The course is designed for students who have never studied EU law.

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

The course is obligatory for the students of the double degree with the MGIMO; students should partecipate to 80% of the classes in order to be able to take the exam.  

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The assessment criteria of knowledge is based on the oral exam and the students' partecipation to the classes.

Capacità

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to quicky grasp the institutional functioning of the EU.

Skills

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to quicky grasp the main ideas of the academic literature on the role of EU in the field of external relations and to grasp the main concepts of EU policy documents.

  • Students are required to read the material made available through the teaching platform and to be able to answer the questions included in the Syllabus made available by the chairholder to the students of the course.

  • Students will have to read the reading material to understand the basic concepts and be able to answer the questions included in the Syllabus.

  • During the lectures, the active partecipation of the student will be considered as a sign of interest in the topics of the course

This course is strongly recommended to students of the first year of the Master Programme in International studies who are required to take the exam International and European Law (module: External relations of the EU)

The reading material of the course (i.e. book chapters or Journal articles commentaries, COM documents, judgements of the Court of Justice, European Council conclusions) is indicated in the syllabus of the course published on the website of the department of political science. Most of the reading material will be uploaded on the elearning platform of the department of political science (access is possible with Alice Credentials and a password provided by the chair holder). Students will be required to read in advance the reading material.

It is important that students read in advance the readings assigned for each class.
