The student will acquire knowledge about constants and variables in the spread of classical works, especially Latin ones, in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Basic notions of Latin palaeography and classical philology.
Tradizioni congiunte, ricongiunte e riemergenti
Si mostrerà quanto spesso la conoscenza di un testo e della sua tradizione manoscritta, e perfino di questioni essenziali come attribuzione, datazione, autenticità ecc., dipenda da quella di altre opere che circolarono insieme a quello o in forma del tutto separata; se ciò è ovvio per la tradizione indiretta e in frammenti e per commenti, scolii, traduzioni (soprattutto dal greco), biografie di autori ecc., si richiamerà l’attenzione da un lato sulla diffusione medievale di codici miscellanei e florilegi, e dall’altro sulla rarità di alcuni testi o parti di testi, di sicura o discussa origine antica, che sopravvissero in condizioni assai precarie e che continuano a riaffiorare. Alla luce di ritrovamenti recenti o meno recenti e di dibattiti ancora aperti, si presenteranno casi come il presunto terzo libro di Apuleio de dogmate Platonis, il cosiddetto frammento Winstedt di Giovenale, le Bucoliche di Marc(i)o Valerio, scolii, vitae e interpolazioni a Terenzio, l’Apocolocintosi di Seneca e il suo titolo, i bella del corpus cesariano, alcuni epigrammi dell’Anthologia Latina, le recensioni ‘interpolate’ di Cassiodoro, Institutiones, libro II, aggiunte nella redazione italiana delle Etymologiae di Isidoro (soprattutto da Carisio nel libro 2 e dall’Indiculus de haeresibus nel libro 8).
Il corso illustrerà costantemente strumenti bibliografici ed informatici per ricerche storiche, prosopografiche e lessicali, utili in particolar modo al reperimento e all'analisi di paralleli per una completa ricostruzione di tradizioni dirette e indirette e di episodi di ricezione medievale e umanistica.
Joint, reunited and re-emerging traditions
It will be shown how often the knowledge of a text and of its manuscript tradition, and even of essential issues such as attribution, dating, authenticity, etc., depends on that of other works that circulated together with it or in a completely separate form; if this is obvious for indirect and fragmentary traditions and for comments, scholia, translations (especially from Greek), biographies of authors, etc., attention will be drawn, on the one hand, to the medieval diffusion of miscellaneous codices and florilegia, and, on the other, to the rarity of some texts or parts of texts, of certain or disputed ancient origin, which survived in very precarious conditions and which still continue to resurface. In the light of recent or less recent findings and still open debates, cases wiil be treated such as the alleged third book of Apuleius' de dogmate Platonis, the so-called Winstedt fragment of Juvenal, the Bucolics of Marc(i)us Valeriius, scholia, vitae and interpolations in Terence, Seneca's Apocolocyntosis and its title, the bella of the Caesarian corpus, some epigrams of the Latin Anthology, the 'interpolated' redactions of Cassiodorus Institutiones, book II, additions in the Italian edition of Isidore's Etymologies (especially from Charisius in book 2 and from the Indiculus de haeresibus in book 8).
The course will constantly illustrate bibliographic and computer tools for historical, prosopographical and lexical research, particularly useful for finding and analyzing parallels in view of a complete reconstruction of direct and indirect traditions and of episodes of medieval reception.
Non è previsto uno specifico testo d’esame. Il materiale necessario sarà fornito o indicato dal docente durante le lezioni. Sarà comunque richiesta un’adeguata capacità d’interpretazione e comprensione di un’edizione, con relativo apparato critico, di Marziale, Liber epigrammaton o de spectaculis (si consiglia di preparare l’esame sulle edizioni di Coleman [K.M. Coleman, M. Valerii Martialis, Liber spectaculorum, edited with Introduction, Translation and Commentary, Oxford 2006] o Carratello [M. Valerii Martialis Epigrammaton liber. Introduzione e Testo Critico di Ugo Carratello, Roma 1981], con lettura delle parti di prefazione sulla tradizione manoscritta; per il testo in sé si accetterà qualsiasi edizione critica completa di Marziale, da Lindsay a Shackleton Bailey, ma in tal caso si accerterà la conoscenza della relativa prefazione), in aggiunta a queste letture:

Chi al punto 2 sceglierà il libro di Paolo Chiesa potrà preparare articoli, sempre per un totale di almeno 30 pp., relativi alle tradizioni trattate in quell’opera (Livio, Quintiliano Inst., Catullo, Historia Augusta, Virgilio, Lucrezio, Tacito Historiae e Annales, Plauto, Seneca Epist., Petronio, Lucano, Apuleio Met., Sallustio Iug. e Cat., Eutropio, Festo).
There is no specific examination text. Necessary material will be provided or indicated by the teacher during the lessons. In any case, an adequate capacity of interpretation and understanding of an edition, with relative critical apparatus, of Martial, Liber epigrammaton or de spectaculis, will be required (it is advisable to prepare the exam on the editions of Coleman [KM Coleman, M. Valerii Martialis , Liber spectaculorum, edited with Introduction, Translation and Commentary, Oxford 2006] or Carratello [M. Valerii Martialis Epigrammaton liber. Introduction and Critical Text by Ugo Carratello, Rome 1981]; sections of the preface concerning manuscript tradition must be read; for the text itself any complete critical edition of Martial will be accepted, from Lindsay to Shackleton Bailey, but in this case knowledge of the relevant preface will be ascertained), in addition to these readings:

3) Some articles from Texts and Transmission. A Survey of the Latin Classics, ed. by L.D. Reynolds, Oxford 1983 (repr. 1986), for a total of at least 30 pp., to be chosen, or to be established in agreement with the teacher together with any other specific title (especially for non-attending students). Those who choose Paolo Chiesa's book at point 2 will have permission to prepare articles, again for a total of at least 30 pages, relating to the traditions dealt with in that work (Livy, Quintilian Inst., Catullus, Historia Augusta, Vergl, Lucretius, Tacitus Historiae and Annales, Plautus, Seneca Epist., Petronius, Lucanus, Apuleius Met., Sallustius Iug. and Cat., Eutropius, Festus).

See under "Bibliography (and teaching material)": in any case, the presentation of a report on a given subject and on readings to be agreed with the teacher will be required.
L'esame si svolgerà come prova finale orale (colloquio con il docente). S'intenderà che la prova non è superata se il candidato non saprà esprimersi adeguatamente, se non conoscerà la terminologia filologica e se dimostrerà di non sapersi orientare nell'interpretazione dell'apparato di un'edizione critica.
All'inizio dell'esame si chiederà di leggere un passo dell'edizione consigliata del testo latino, di tradurlo e di analizzare il significato e il valore degli errori e delle varianti registrate in apparato in rapporto alle conoscenze acquisite sulla tradizione dell'opera. Poi il candidato dovrà rispondere a domande precise sui tre punti indicati nella sezione sulla bibliografia.
The examination will take place as an oral final test (interview with the teacher). It is understood that the test is not passed if the candidate does not know how to express himself properly, if he does not know the philological terminology and if he proves that he cannot orient himself in the interpretation of the apparatus of a critical edition.
At the beginning of the exam, students will be asked to read a passage from the recommended edition of the Latin text, to translate it and to analyze the meaning and value of the errors and variants recorded in the apparatus, in relation to the notions acquired about the tradition of the work. Then the candidate will have to answer specific questions on the three points listed in the bibliographical section.
Le lezioni inizieranno giovedì 25 febbraio. Durante l'orario previsto, il docente si manterrà collegato sulla piattaforma Teams e risponderà a qualsiasi domanda, pronto ad interagire con l'intero gruppo degli studenti o con i singoli interessati. Ma almeno per il momento, per scongiurare i probabili problemi di connessiione, si propone di registrare le lezioni, se possibile, suddividendole in almeno tre parti, con almeno un giorno d'anticipo, e di caricarle nella sezione Files della stessa piattaforma. Per il materiale didattico e accessorio, su richiesta potrà essere attivato anche uno spazio su Moodle, ma in prima istanza si sfrutterà per quanto possibile la stessa sezione Files.
