Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The course aims to provide contents and tools to understand the complexity of the global geo-economic space as well as the integration and differentiation processes that characterize it. 

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The ability to learn the main contents of the course and to interpret the connections between the socio-economic phenomena illustrated in the lessons will be evaluated, both through the interaction with the teacher during the lectures and in the final exam. It is planned to create the possibility, during the classes, for an active participation of students, made possible also by the organization of seminars about some specific issues.

Skills

The course aims to help students to acquire the ability to understand processes that have contributed to the current spatial configuration of the economic, social and territorial relations of the different countries and regions of the world. We will try to develop the ability to use the language of geography and to develop skills not only in the knowledge of the most recent processes that characterize the contemporary world, but also in the interpretation of the connections between phenomena that occur in different areas of the world system.

The ability to critically expose the issues and to use an appropriate terminology will be evaluated.

Attention to the contents presented by the teacher and active participation in the discussion in the classroom.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons (with slides).

Interactive discussion between teacher and students.

Possible in-depth seminars with experts.

Involvement of students in seminars on some topics and on case studies.

Syllabus

The course will cover the most recent economic and social changes that characterize the contemporary world, with particular attention to the following areas: the new gegraphies of globalization, the global and local dialectic, the growing dynamics of urbanization and the migration flows, the role of cities in world economic geography, the impact of the new industrial revolution and digital platforms, economic and socio-territorial inequalities, center-periphery disparities.

These issues will be coverd by adopting various territorial scales (world, Mediterranean, Italy) and presenting case studies aimed at providing examples about the topics discussed in class.

The slides used during the lectures as well as in-depth articles about the topics covered during the course will be available for attending students (see "Assessment methods").

Students who constantly attend lessons will have to prepare, for the exam:

1. the topics covered during the lectures;

2. the teaching materials and in-depth articles that will be indicated during the course and uploaded in the Moodle platform;

3. the book Conti Giaccaria P., Rossi U., Salone C. (2014), Geografia economica e politica, Pearson, Milano.

Notes

The course will start in the second semester.
