The student will gain knowledge regarding emotions and intersubjectivity, both from a theoretical and a historical-philosophical perspective.
Active participation in the seminar will be considered important for the assessment of knowledge. Furthermore, students will give oral presentations during the course and will take a final oral exam.

The course, which will take the form of a seminar, will begin with some introductory lessons of the teacher, in which the ambiguous situation of shame among emotions of self-evaluation such as guilt, regret, remorse, self-esteem, self-disappointment, self-contempt will be presented. As it will be seen, starting from an important essay by Bernard Williams (Shame and Necessity 1994), the dichotomy between culture of shame and culture of guilt, long established among many scholars, has been questioned. As a result, the view of shame as a superficial, heteronomous and selfish emotion is unjustified (cf. Fussi, Per una teoria della vergogna, 2018). After the first introductory lectures, we will move on to a purely seminar part, in which students will make individual or group presentations on different texts.
The theme of shame and modesty will be analyzed primarily from four perspectives:
1. Difference between emotions that broadly belong to the sphere of shame and emotions that broadly belong to the sphere of guilt beginning with Williams' theses on the Greeks. In particular, texts by Plato and Aristotle will be analyzed, taking into consideration the most relevant secondary literature.
2. Shame, modesty, intersubjectivity, corporeality(from a phenomenological perspective as well as from the point of view of some contemporary theories in the analytical tradition.
3. Shame and Social Identity.
4. Shame in literature and cinema.

Since this will be, for all intents and purposes, a seminar involving student presentations, topics and texts may vary depending on the size and specific interests of the group.
Since this is a seminar, attendance and active participation in class is considered essential. Those who have problems attending this course can contact the instructor
Students will be expected to engage in an oral report (individually or in groups) on texts agreed upon with the instructor. They will also have to take a final exam discussing a chapter of A. Fussi, Per una teoria della vergogna (2018), and on one of the texts analyzed in the chapter in question (for example, those who choose chapter 4, "Shame and Social Identity" may also read Velleman's essay, The Genesis of Shame; or Deigh's essay, "Shame and Self-Esteem: A Critique"; or Calhoun's essay "An Apology for Moral Shame"; alternatively, another relevant text may be chosen after consulting with the professor). The text discussed in the exam cannot be the same as the one presented in the seminar.
