Learning outcomes
Knowledge

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Know the principles of green chemistry applied to production of materials and to chemical processes;
  • Know the tools and methodologies for the assessment of chemical, toxicological and environmental risk, life cycle analysis of products and processes;
  • Know the criteria for selecting raw materials to produce materials and chemical products;
  • Know the criteria for selecting heterogeneous supported catalysts;
  • Find alternative reaction pathways with better environmental performance;
  • Find Alternative solvents to VOC: supercritical fluids, ionic/eutectic liquids, etc...;
  • Know the methods/equipment to intensify a chemical process. 
Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge will be assessed via:

  • ongoing assignments
  • final written exam evaluating the knowledge and appliance according to the intended learning outcomes.
Skills

After the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork skills through technical reports and presentations
  • to understand the reasons for the choice of reaction paths, raw materials and equipment in order to increase the sustainability of a product or process.

Syllabus

 

  1. Introduction of Green Chemistry: the 12 principles of green chemistry and definition of environmental indicators such as atom economy, environmental factor and process mass intensity. Examples of strategies to improve the atom economy of production processes by alternative synthetic pathways, reuse or recycle of byproducts.  
  2. Catalysis and Heterogeneous catalysis: green catalysts, biocatalysts and nonmetallic catalysts with high activity, selectivity, stability and recyclability.
  3. Green solvents: properties and applications of green solvents such as supercritical fluids, ionic liquids, water, biobased solvents, nontoxic liquid polymers. Examples of application of ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents (DES), and supercritical fluids in separation and fractionation processes such as extraction of active biomolecules and biopolymers from biomass and enzymatic technologies.
  4. Selection of reagents and reaction pathways: exploitation of reaction routes and processes using greener, cheaper, safer reagents and sustainable energy, such as molecular oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, organic carbonates and solar energy. Identification of chemical reaction pathways for a better environmental performance of the production process of a product.  
  5. Use of biomass as feedstock: development of efficient, green, and economic technologies to convert renewable biomass (lignocelluloses, protein and algae) into valuable chemicals and materials.
  6. Biobased and biodegradable plastics: production, properties and applications of PLA, PHAs, PBS/PBSA and termoplastic starch blends. 
  7. Intensification of chemical processes: process intensification by continuous production and intensification of reaction and chemical processes using methods such as static mixing reactor, monolithic reactor, microreactor, compact heat exhanger, integrated heat reactor, and alternative sources of energy: microwave and ultrasound.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of a written test consisting in
questions and simple exercises to solve on the topics covered in the course.
The oral exam is optional and can be done at the student's discretion after passing the written test with a grade> 17/30.
