Knowledge

The purpose of the course is to transmit the fundamentals related to thermodynamics applied to machines, with particular regard to thermal machines and thermodynamic cycles that are most frequently found in the paper industry, also giving basic notions on combustion, on the management of steam generators, on the steam and condensate plant, on cogeneration cycles, on the energy production plant components and finally on the technologies for the abatement of the emissions generated by the thermal machines.

The appropriate methods of managing and distributing thermal energy in the paper plants dedicated to the production of tissue paper, packaging paper and cardboard will also be illustrated.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

In order to monitor the academic progress, ongoing assessment will be carried out during which students will be asked to analyze practical problems and/or to comment on the results of energy analysis.

Skills

By the end of the courses, the students will be able to:

- carry out energy analyzes of existing systems

- evaluate the feasibility of new plants for the separate or cogeneration production of electricity and heat

- evaluate and define strategies for improving the energy performance of paper plants

- analyse the components of plants for electrical and thermal generation

- perform energy and mass balances of complex systems

- know the operational problems of plants for electrical and thermal generation

- know the main air pollutants produced by the paper mill's thermal machines and the related abatement systems

Prerequisites

To successfully follow the course, the student should have basic knowledge in the following areas:

- mathematics

- mechanics

- fundamentals of thermodynamics

Teaching methods

The teaching methodology used consists of:

- presentations on Powerpoint projected and commented in class and which report the topics of the course. These presentations, which will be made available to students, can also be used as handouts for home study

- classroom exercise will be carried out during the courses, during which students will be asked to analyze and solve practical problems.
