Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to analyze historical garden and prepare a project to recover and improve the garden. the students must show to know the history of a garden, to know the general theory of restoration and the Chartes of historical garden. Moreover he or she must be able to project the recover of plants. This ability supposes the knowledge of the methods to check the current status of the garden.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

For the assessment of knowledge, periodic audits and assessment tests will be carried out on the various topics discussed in the lesson.

Skills


At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Know the history of the garden;
  • Perform topographic and vegetational surveys of the garden
  • Identify the main issues that may be present
  • Elaborate a restoration proposal
Assessment criteria of skills

During the course of the course, exercises and guided tours of historic gardens will be performed during which the student will have to prove that he knows how to recognize the garden style, the ornamental species present, and describe the main issues

At the end of the course the student will be able to develop the ability to suggest the best choices for the valorisation of a historic garde

Prerequisites

The knowledge gained within the three-year degree, corresponding to the requirements for access to the Study Course, are considered sufficient.

Teaching methods


Classroom lessons are held with the help of slides; Numerous lessons and exercitations are also held outdoor  during the course (guided tours of public and private historical gardens).

Syllabus

Garden history from antiquity to the 19th century, to create the basics necessary for the analysis of the historical ggardens and to recognize the typical compositional lines of each epoch and the cultural landscape in which they developed. The garden in antiquity: Babylonian gardens, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans. The garden in the Middle Ages: monastic gardens, hortus conclusus. The Renaissance Garden: Characters, Peculiarities, Examples. The baroque garden. The English landscape garden. The 19th century public park. Remarks of restoration history. The theory of restoration applied to the historic garden. The Chart of Florence and the regulations. The stages of a restoration project. Documental research: state archive, leopoldine cadastre, online resources. The topographic relief in the historic garden. Methodology of intervention on historical gardens: examples of restorations made on public and private historical gardens

Non-attending students can attend the lessons by using the teaching material provided by the teacher and following the lessons register.

Assessment methods


Oral examination. The student is required to prepare a presentation about a historic garden.
