Knowledge

At the end of the course, students will be able to orient themselves in time and space (5th-15th centuries, Mediterranean area), developing a good knowledge of the main axes of the medieval debate.

Two in itinere written tests (not compulsory); final oral examination.

  1. To develop a good awareness of the distinctive features of the medieval millennium.
  2. To be able to deal with a medieval source and contextualise it in the light of the most appropriate questions.

Prerequisites

The essential outlines of the discipline acquired during high school studies. Knowledge of Latin is desirable, but not necessary.

Teaching methods

The course, articulated in lectures, consists of two parts: the first, dedicated to the centuries prior to the 12th, is held by Prof. Tomei; the second, dedicated to the centuries after the 12th, is held by Prof. Paganelli. Each lesson will start from the reading and commentary of a source.

Syllabus

The key events of medieval history, set in an interpretative and historiographical framework.

The first part will address the following issues: the Roman state and its transformations; the Roman-Barbarian galaxy; the Mediterranean of Justinian and Mohammed; the Lombard kingdom; the Carolingian reorganisation; an iron century?; the age of change; knights and citizens.

The second part will deal with: cities and communes; the building of the papal monarchy; the empire at the time of the Swabians; the empire in the 14th century; the Avignon papacy; currency and trade; the crisis of the 14th century; the formation of regional and national states.

Non-attending students info

Self-study of the entire handbook; two readings, one from Group 1 and one from Group 2.

Assessment methods

The examination for attending students consists of the study of the entire handbook, the contents presented and discussed in class, and a reading of their choice in group 1 or group 2.

Two written tests are scheduled to assess knowledge of the topics discussed in class and present in the handbook: one on Prof. Tomei's part (mid-course) and one on Prof. Paganelli's part (end of course). The tests are not mandatory, but passing them allows the oral examination on the choice reading alone.
