Learning outcomes
Knowledge

Students will have acquired knowledge about the basic concepts of:

  • financial markets: main functions of financial markets, type of financial markets and the most relevant financial instruments;
  • financial institutions: type of financial institutions and their main functions;
  • new challenges in the financial system: sustainable finance and the rise of Fintech.
Assessment criteria of knowledge

Ongoing assessments to verify the acquired knowledge will be carried out through interaction professor- students.

Skills

At the end of the course student will be able to understand the functioning of financial markets and the role of financial institutions within the economic system. Students will know the main aspects of the financial system (financial markets and institutions)-firm relationship.  

Moreover, students will be able to understand how the emerging challenges (e.g., Fintech and sustainability finance) are changing the financial services industry. 

Assessment criteria of skills

Students shall discuss about some topics during the lectures.

Behaviors

At the end of the course student will be able to interpret and assess the role of financial markets and institutions within the economic system.   

Moreover, students will obtain increased awareness about weaknesses and opportunities connected with the relationship between financial system (financial markets and institutions) and firms.

Prerequisites

Students should know the basics of business economics.

Syllabus

The course provides a general understandng of the different functions performed by financial markets and institutions and their role in the economic system. The course also addresses the main challenges in the financial system, with particular emphasis on the rise of Fintech and the sustainable finance.

Specifically, the course will cover the following topics:

  1. Financial system: functions; bank-based vs financial markets systems; monetary and supervisory  authorities. 
  2. Financial Markets: money, capital and derivatives markets.
  3. Financial institutions: banks, insurance and funds.
  4. Banks: commercial versus investment banking.
  5. Financial innovatons  and the rise of Fintech.
  6. Sustainable finance.
