Conoscenze

Knowledge

To acquire the student's basic knowledge of the physiology and functioning of the animal organism, even in a comparative manner, with respect to the nervous system, muscle tissue, kidney physiology and reproduction in animal species of veterinary interest.

The module of Ethology and Animal Welfare has the purpose of providing the student with in-depth knowledge of the behavior of pets. These notions will be indispensable to enable the student to properly assess the level of animal welfare and to be able to adequately intervene to protect him.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

For Physiology, the acquired knowledge will be evaluated through two ongoing assessments, consisting of written tests with closed and open answers, and possibly with oral exams at the end of the course.

For the Animal Ethology and Wellbeing module, knowledge will be evaluated through an oral exam at the end of the course.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam

Further information:
Examination Consists in two written exams; alternative Oral exam

Skills

The student will need to acquire the ability to dynamically integrate the various functions and evaluation elements of the main physiological parameters, in some cases by performing simple examinations and laboratory tests.

For the module of Animal Ethology and Wellbeing, the student must acquire the ability to integrate knowledge about the behavior of different pets in order to evaluate their state of well-being and the quality of their relationship with the human being.

Assessment criteria of skills

Physiology will assess the ability, during written and oral tests, to critically analyze interactions between physiological systems.

For the module of Animal Ethology and Wellbeing, during the oral examination, the student must demonstrate that he possesses the ability to analyze different behaviors in relation to their importance in revealing the animal's level of well-being and the type of relationship existing with the animal, human being.

Behaviors

In the module of Animal Ethology and Wellbeing, the student can acquire and develop a particular sensibility regarding the welfare of both breeding animals and those of affection.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

During the lessons the student will demonstrate the acquired sensitivity that will be evaluated based on the behaviors performed.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

The integrated course is foreseen for the pre-courses of the courses of Anatomy and Biochemistry. For physiology, useful physico-biological knowledge is useful.

For the module of animal ethology and welfare are important knowledge of the anatomical structures of the nervous system, the endocrinological and physiological ones necessary for the understanding of the mechanisms related to stress.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The frontal lessons take place in the classroom with the help of slides projected during the lesson and previously provided to students via the e-learning system. During the course and before the exam, students can be received by the teacher by appointment, to be requested by email. At the end of the frontal lessons and before taking the exam, students must have attended the practical activities provided for the individual modules.

Non-attending students info

The course does not require a frequency requirement. Non-attendants can prepare the exam using the slides available on the department's e-learning site.

Assessment methods

For the Physiology module, the exam consists of 2 written tests, quizzes and an oral interview if the student has not achieved enough in both tests. Oral evidence is nevertheless sustainable as an alternative to written tests.
Only the oral exam is for the Animal Ethology and Welfare module.
