Il corso intende fornire a studentesse e studenti le nozioni fondamentali concernenti la filologia germanica e la tradizione testuale delle lingue germaniche antiche, nonché gli strumenti basilari dell’ecdotica applicata a tali testi. Una parte del corso sarà dedicata a un approfondimento critico di elementi delle culture germaniche nel contesto della produzione e trasmissione coeva, con specifico riferimento a nozioni basilari della linguistica germanica.
The course aims at providing students with the basic notions concerning Germanic philology and the textual tradition of ancient Germanic languages, as well as the basic tools of textual criticism applied to these texts. Part of the course will be devoted to a critical examination of elements of Germanic cultures in the context of coeval production and transmission, with specific reference to basic notions of Germanic linguistics.
Il corso prevede lezioni frontali e seminariali con la partecipazione attiva di studentesse e studenti, che a fine anno presenteranno in classe una relazione precedentemente concordata con la docente. Tale relazione rappresenta requisito indispensabile per sostenere l’esame. Le linee guida per la stesura dell’elaborato scritto saranno caricate su Moodle. Durante le lezioni sarà verificata, attraverso discussioni collettive (senza valutazione), la progressiva acquisizione degli elementi culturali, storici, linguistici utili per lavorare con i testi germanici antichi.
The course includes lectures and seminars with the active participation of students, with the constant involvement of students, who are required to submit in the classroom a report previously agreed upon with the lecturer. That report is a prerequisite for taking the exam. Guidelines for the written paper will be uploaded on Moodle. During the lessons, the progressive acquisition of the cultural, historical and linguistic elements useful for working with ancient Germanic texts will be verified through collective discussions (without assessment).
Al termine del corso studentesse e studenti saranno in grado di:
- utilizzare correttamente il lessico proprio della disciplina;
- utilizzare gli strumenti di analisi propri della disciplina;
- discutere in modo autonomo e critico delle nozioni relative al metodo filologico e della critica testuale applicati ai testi germanici antichi;
- individuare le caratteristiche linguistiche e stilistiche di tali testi.
Attraverso la traduzione dell'opera oggetto del corso e la redazione, l’analisi e la presentazione orale degli elaborati scritti prodotti da ciascuna/o studentessa / studente alla fine del corso, si intende dare seguito alle misure di contrasto all’impoverimento linguistico in conformità con gli obiettivi del progetto di eccellenza dipartimentale CECIL.
By the end of the course students will be able to:
- use the specific language of the discipline;
- use the proper investigation methods of the discipline;
- discuss autonomously and critically the notions related to the philological method and textual criticism applied to ancient Germanic texts.
The translation of the work object of the course, as well as the writing, analysis, and oral presentation of the papers, written by each student by the end of the course, are in line with the measures to combat language pauperisation that make up the core of the departmental Excellence project (CECIL).
Studentesse e studenti di Linguistica e Traduzione prepareranno ciascuna/o un elaborato scritto, il cui argomento sarà stato concordato all'inizio del corso con la docente, e lo presenteranno oralmente in classe. Come allievi che affrontano la disciplina per la prima volta, le studentesse e gli studenti di Informatica Umanistica frequentanti prepareranno un elaborato scritto collettivo, che presenteranno in classe.
L'esame orale finale verificherà la rielaborazione autonoma e critica degli argomenti affrontati durante il corso e la capacità di applicare gli strumenti di analisi propri della disciplina.
Linguistica e Traduzione Students will prepare a written paper, the topic of which will have been agreed upon at the beginning of the course with the lecturer, and present it orally in class.
As students approaching the discipline for the first time, the attending Informatica Umanistica Magistrale students will prepare a collective written paper, which they will then submit to the class.
Studentesse e studenti avranno appreso il modo di condurre una discussione critica sugli argomenti del programma, oltre alla capacità di applicare gli strumenti propri della filologia germanica nell’analisi dei testi germanici antichi.
Students will have learnt how to conduct a critical discussion of the programme topics, as well as the ability to apply the tools of Germanic philology in the analysis of ancient Germanic texts.
La verifica dei comportamenti avverrà per mezzo di discussioni in classe e durante la presentazione orale degli elaborati scritti.
The assessment criteria of behaviours will take place by means of class discussions and during the oral presentation of the papers.

La letteratura escatologica di area alto-tedesca antica: il Muspilli. Introduzione alla filologia germanica; cenni di storia delle migrazioni, organizzazione sociale, cultura, religione e oralità dei Germani antichi; elementi di storia delle letterature germaniche antiche, con particolare riguardo all’area alto-tedesca; introduzione alla critica testuale nell’ambito dei testi germanici antichi, anche in riferimento agli strumenti dell’ecdotica digitale. Una parte del corso sarà espressamente dedicata alla poesia di area alto-tedesca antica e all’analisi testuale, narratologica e linguistica del Muspilli; saranno presentati inoltre esempi di letteratura escatologica di altre aree germaniche antiche.
The eschatological literature of the Old High German area: the poem “Muspilli”. Introduction to Germanic Philology; outlines of the history of migrations, social organisation, culture, religion and orality of the ancient Germanics; elements of the history of ancient Germanic literatures, with particular regard to the High-German area; introduction to textual criticism in the field of ancient Germanic texts, also with reference to the tools of digital ecdotics. A part of the course will be expressly dedicated to the poetry of the Old High German area and to the textual, narratological and linguistic analysis of Muspilli; examples of eschatological literature other old Germanic areas will also be discussed.

La valutazione finale sarà effettuata con un colloquio orale, le domande verteranno sugli argomenti trattati durante il corso e sui testi in bibliografia. Si terrà conto della proprietà di linguaggio e della capacità di rielaborazione personale dei temi affrontati. Sarà inoltre richiesta la lettura, traduzione e commento di alcuni versi del poema Muspilli esaminati durante il corso.

The exam consists of an oral test. The questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and on the texts in the bibliography. Proper use of language as well as the ability to personal re-elaborate the topics addressed will be taken into account. The reading, translation, and commentary of the verses of the poem Beowulf examined during the course.
