La linguistica ha dato da sempre un contributo sostanziale alla traduzione, fornendo categorie di analisi e descrizione e modelli teorici di riferimento. La traduzione pone infatti al centro dell’attenzione il problema del significato e la sua realizzazione in lingue diverse. La conoscenza dei principali contributi nell’ambito degli studi di semantica, pragmatica, corpus linguistics, linguistica contrastiva rappresenta la base per una riflessione scientifica e sistematica sul processo traduttivo. Il corso è condiviso per 6 cfu dai due percorsi linguistico e traduttivo (prof.ssa Bruti). Si differenzia poi per 3 cfu dedicati ad un laboratorio traduttivo per il percorso traduttivo e ad un approfondimento teorico sul ruolo degli elementi lessicali nella comprensione di informazioni fattuali e nei processi inferenziali locali e globali in testi in lingua straniera per il percorso linguistico (dott.ssa Simi). Alla fine del corso lo studente sarà consapevole delle principali problematiche del tradurre, avrà una conoscenza delle teorie della traduzione e dei contributi forniti dalla linguistica teorica alla storia della traduzione, con particolare riguardo alla pragmatica e alla sociolinguistica. Inoltre, lo studente sarà consapevole delle principali asimmetrie e differenze strutturali e culturali con l'italiano.
Complessivamente, il corso mira al raggiungimento del livello C1 di competenza della lingua inglese. Ai due curricula del Corso è associato un lettorato di Lingua Inglese di livello C1 del QCER (dott.ssa Tracy Hale), che si terrà per due semestri (informazioni sul sito MOODLE-CLI). Al termine dei due semestri gli studenti possono sostenere la prova di competenza pratica della lingua. Il possesso del livello richiesto, C1, sarà requisito necessario per poter verbalizzare l’esame. La prova di lettorato può essere sostituita da una certificazione internazionale di livello C1 (Cambridge CAE; IELTS 6,5-7,5; TOEFL ibt 94-104) conseguita da non più di 2 anni. Per gli studenti del percorso TRA sarà necessario superare la prova finale del laboratorio traduttivo, mentre quelli del percorso LING sosteranno una verifica relativa al percorso di approfondimento di 3 cfu.
Linguistics has always made a substantial contribution to translation, providing categories of analysis and description and theoretical models of reference. Translation focuses on the problem of meaning and its implementation in different languages. Knowledge of the main contributions in the field of semantics, pragmatics, corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics is the basis for a scientific and systematic reflection on the translation process. The course is shared for 6 cfu by the two curricula TRA and LING (prof.ssa Bruti). It then differs for 3 credits dedicated to a translation lab for the translation curriculum and a module on the major hypotheses relative to the role of lexical items in the comprehension of L2 texts. Special focus will be on the different processes involved in the recovery of factual information, local inferences and global inferences for the linguistic curriculum (dott.ssa Simi). At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the most important contributions of linguistic theories to Translation Studies, and will be aware of the basic notions and categories for the analysis of English texts and of their translations. Moreover, students will be aware of the structural and cultural differences between English and Italian.
The course is aimed at a C1 level of English proficiency. For this purpose, the course is associated with an oral and written practice of the language (with Dr Tracy Hale), which will be held for two semesters (information on the MOODLE-CLI website). At the end of the two semesters, students can take the test of language competence. Possession of the required level, C1, will in any case be necessary to be able to obtain an overall mark. The language test may be replaced by an international C1 (Cambridge CAE; IELTS 6.5-7.5; TOEFL ibt 94-104) certificate obtained no later than 2 years before the date of the exam. For students of the TRA curriculum a positive mark in the translation laboratory is also necessary, whereas LING students will take a test related to the course of 3 credits.
Lo studente frequentante potrà seguire un percorso con prove in itinere (prova scritta su Moodle). Lo studente non frequentante sosterrà una prova scritta (su Moodle) e una prova orale.
Attending students can sit prove in itinere (a written test on the Moodle platform). Non-attending students will take a written test and an oral test.
Lo studente dovrà a) essere consapevole delle principali questioni teoriche sulla traduzione e sulla storia dei translation studies e b) essere capace di analizzare e commentare traduzioni esistenti e di fornire opzioni alternative applicando le nozioni e le strategie studiate.
Students will have to a) be aware of the main theoretical issues on translation and the history of translation studies and b) be able to analyze and evaluate existing translations and provide alternative options by applying the notions and strategies studied. Students will be able to assess the quality of existing translations and provide alternative options.
Nel corso delle lezioni gli studenti saranno coinvolti nella discussione di traduzioni esistenti e saranno loro assegnate brevi relazioni su argomenti trattati.
During the lessons, students will be involved in the discussion of existing translations and will be assigned short reports on some of the topics covered in the course.
Lo studente svilupperà una sensibilità alle problematiche traduttive e saprà orientarsi nelle scelte traduttive seguendo i principi metodologici e le strategie indicati nel corso. In conformità con gli obiettivi del progetto di eccellenza CECIL, lo studente sarà guidato ad affinare la precisione lessicale e la scelta stilistica appropriata nell'analisi e nella produzione di testi.
Students will develop sensitivity towards translation problems and will be able to orient themselves in translation choices following the methodological principles indicated in the course. In accordance with the objectives of the CECIL project of excellence, students will be guided to refine their lexical accuracy and appropriate stylistic choices in the evaluation and production of texts.

Le lezioni sono frontali ma gli studenti sono coinvolti costantemente e, nei limiti consentiti dai numeri dei frequentanti, la discussione può assumere forma seminariale. Il laboratorio traduttivo ha carattere interattivo.
The course consists of lectures but students are constantly involved and, within the limits allowed by the numbers of participants, it can take the form of a seminar. The translation lab is highly interactive.
Titolo del Corso: English Linguistics and Translation
I primi 6 cfu del corso (36 ore) tenuto dalla prof.ssa Bruti sono comuni ai due percorsi LINGUISTICO e TRADUTTIVO. Il percorso TRADUTTIVO è integrato da un modulo di 3 cfu svolto dalla dott.ssa Stefania MERANI (A-L) e dalla dott.ssa Federica MERANI (M-Z), mentre il percorso LINGUISTICO prosegue per ulteriori 3 cfu (18 ore) con la dott.ssa Simi su argomenti di specializzazione su argomenti di specializzazione sul ruolo del lessico nei processi di comprensione.
Nei 6 cfu comuni, il corso si concentra sul processo traduttivo e alcuni principi cardine. Saranno inoltre oggetto di studio alcuni capitoli fondamentali della storia dei Translation Studies fino alle teorie più recenti. Particolare attenzione sarà posta sulla ritraduzione dei classici e alle differenze ideologiche emergenti e alla traduzione audiovisiva. L’analisi dei testi e delle traduzioni sarà una parte consistente del corso.
I 3 cfu di specializzazione linguistica saranno dedicati alla discussione del ruolo degli elementi lessicali nella comprensione di informazioni fattuali e nei processi inferenziali locali e globali in testi in lingua straniera.
Course title: English Linguistics and Translation
The first 6 credits of the course (36 hours) held by Professor Bruti is addressed to students of both curricula, LINGUISTICS and TRANSLATION. The TRANSLATION curriculum is complemented by a 3 cfu module carried out by Dr Stefania MERANI (A-L) and Dr Federica MERANI (M-Z), while the LINGUISTIC curriculum continues for further 3 cfu (18 hours) with dott.ssa Simi on on the role of vocabulary in comprehension processes.
In the 6 common credits, the course focuses on the translating process and some of the main principles of translation. Some fundamental chapters of the history of Translation Studies up to the most recent theories will also be studied. Special attention will be paid to the concept of- retranslation of the classics and to the emerging ideological differences, and to audiovisual translation. The analysis of texts and translations will be a substantial part of the course.
The 3 credits of linguistic specialization will be dedicated to an overview of the major hypotheses relative to the role of lexical items in the comprehension of L2 texts. Special focus will be on the different processes involved in the recovery of factual information, local inferences and global inferences.

Il corso consta di tre parti, delle quali si specificano le modalità di verifica:
1) il corso della prof.ssa Bruti (secondo semestre) prevede una prova scritta e una orale (per i frequentanti sono previsti il test scritto su Moodle, una breve presentazione e l'orale). Gli studenti del percorso frequentanti possono sostenere il test su Moodle nell'ultima lezione del corso e l'orale entro luglio. Altrimenti, lo scritto su Moodle e l'orale devono essere sostenuti nello stesso appello.
2) lingua strumentale o esercitazioni di lettorato (primo e secondo semestre), che terminano con prove su tutte e 4 le abilità ad accertare il possesso del livello C1 (in alternativa si accettano Cambridge CAE; IELTS 6,5-7,5; TOEFL ibt 94-104 conseguiti da non più di due anni). La valutazione sarà espressa in lettere (il livello C consiste nel raggiungimento delle abilità minime previste dal CEFR per il livello, ad es. A = solido C1 in tutte le abilità e magari in alcune C1+; B = solido C1 su tutte le abilità; C = C1 con qualche debolezza specifica, per es. in una delle quattro abilità).
3a) STUDENTI TRA: il laboratorio traduttivo (che si tiene il secondo semestre) prevede una prova di traduzione dall'inglese all'italiano il cui esito concorre al voto finale. La validità è di DUE anni.
3b) STUDENTI LING: il corso della dott.ssa Simi (dicembre 2023) prevede una prova orale.
I voti riportati nel laboratorio o nel corso con la dott.ssa Simi concorreranno alla valutazione finale in maniera ponderata.
The course consists of three parts, whose assessment methods are specified below:
1) lectures by prof. Bruti (second semester): students will be assessed with a written and oral examination (for attending students continuous assessment is possible, with a written Moodle test, abrief class presentation and an oral interview). The students who opt for continuous assessment might take the written test on Moodle in the last lesson of the course and sit the oral exam in any session but by the end of July. All the rest must sit the written and oral tests in the same appello.
2) instrumental language classes (first and second semesters), ending with both written and oral tests on all 4 skills aimed at ascertaining the possession of the C1 level (alternatively, Cambridge CAE; IELTS 6,5-7,5; TOEFL ibt 94-104 are accepted, obtained no later than 2 years). The assessment will be expressed in letters (Level C is the achievement of the minimum CEFR skills for the level, e.g. A = a solid C1 in all abilities and maybe some C1+; B = a solid C1 on all abilities; C = a C1 with some specific weakness, e.g. in one of the four abilities).
3) translation lab (held in the second semester), the frequency of which is highly recommended; the lab ends with a translation test from English to Italian whose outcome contributes to the final mark.
3a) TRA STUDENTS: the translation lab (held in the second semester) ends with a test of translation from English to Italian whose result contributes to the final mark. The mark is valid for TWO years.
3b) LING STUDENTS: for the course taguth by Dr Simi (December 2023) students will be assessed through an oral exam.
The marks obtained in the lab or in the course with Dr Simi will contribute to the final evaluation in a weighted manner.

Il lettorato della dott.ssa Hale inizierà con una presentazione mercoledì 20 alle ore 10.15 in aula Ricci 1.
