Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will acquire a good knowledge about the foundamental principles of Chemistry and will obtain skills related to periodic properties of elements and their distribution on the planet. He will be capable of dealing with stoichiometric calculations related to the balance of quantitative and equilibrium reactions. He develops a good awareness of the composition and reactivity of simple inorganic substances.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be evaluated for his / her demonstrated ability to discuss the main contents of the course using the appropriate terminology. - During the written test will be evaluated by his understanding of the problems, its ability to bind them to the course topics, his logic and calculation skills . The result will be sufficient if in the 2 hours available will solve at least 60% of the problems proposed. - During the oral exam, the student must be able to explain any failures in the written test, to relate the various arguments presented in the course, must show a sufficient knowledge of the principal properties of the main groups elements. - It will be strongly appreciated the ability of applying the chemical concepts to simple practical problems.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam
  • Periodic written tests

Further information:
Examination includes a written test (4 exercises to be done in 2 hours) that aims to ensure a sufficient capacity of understanding and solving stoichiometric problems and other calculations related to the course program . The achievement of a sufficient result in the written test gives access to the oral test, which ranges over all the theoretical and practical topics of the course. The result of the oral examination influences to a greater extent the final score. In this way it is possible to obtain the highest score by an excellent oral exam but a just sufficient written test.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • individual study

Attendance: Not mandatory

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Task-based learning/problem-based learning/inquiry-based learning

Syllabus
The course provides notions about the atomic nature of the matter and about the relations between the atom properties and its chemical behaviour. It deals with different types of chemical bonds and the physical and chemical properties of the resulting matter: solid, liquid or gaseous. The fundamental principles of chemical Thermodinamics are presented. Chemical reactivity is discussed in terms of the nature of reagents and products and in terms of stoichiometric balance. Equilibrium reactions are discussed both in homogeneous or in eterogeneous media. Concepts about the electrochemistry and chemical kinetics are presented. The course is concluded by a presentation of the properties of elements of the main groups of the periodic Table.
