L'unità "Storia, politica, religione e società in Nord AFrica e Medio Oriente" risulta composta dei seguenti corsi:
ISLAMISTICA
L’obiettivo principale del corso consiste nel fornire a studenti/esse gli strumenti per comprendere i fondamenti della dottrina e del pensiero islamico dagli anni in cui visse Muhammad ai nostri giorni. Dopo aver analizzato la nascita e lo sviluppo del credo e della legge ci si soffermerà ad analizzare temi centrali nel dibattito attuale quali le questioni di genere, il concetto di jihad e l’Islam in Europa in una prospettiva storica.
STORIA DEL VICINO ORIENTE
L’obiettivo principale del corso consiste nel fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per interpretare e comprendere i cambiamenti storici, politici, religiosi, sociali ed economici avvenuti nel Vicino Oriente dalla crisi dell’Impero Ottomano sino agli anni ’80 del XX secolo.
ISLAMIC STUDIES
The main objective of this part of course is to provide students with the means to interpret and understand the foundations of Islamic philosophy and thoughts from the advent of Islam to contemporary times. Following an analysis of the birth and development of Islamic belief and law, and their codification over time- with particular attention to the reform movements- we will focus on analyzing central issues in current debates such as gender equality, the concept of Jihad and the status of Islam in Europe from a historical perspective. The aim of the course is to provide students with a critical knowledge and the tools to orient themselves in learning the fundamentals of Islam and to comprehend the pluralities and dynamics that characterize the Islamic World.
HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST
Students who complete this course successfully will develop a solid knowledge of the main political processes and events in the modern Middle East history (1918-1991) and will be aware of the historical background that is necessary to understand present developments in the Middle East. More specifically, they will be able to understand the origins and the development of the modern Middle East and will be aware of the political, social, economic, and cultural elements that still characterize the region nowadays. Finally, they will be able to engage and look critically at the main historiography dealing with the Middle East history of the 20th century.

Per i frequentanti le conoscenze verranno verificate durante la discussione di letture assegnate in classe e nel corso dell’esame orale; per i non frequentanti la verifica delle conoscenze avverrà durante l’esame orale.

For attending students, knowledge will be verified during class discussions of reading assignments and oral examination; for those not attending the evaluation is based on oral examination.
HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST
Students who attend course's classes and write the final paper must demonstrate the ability to thoroughly deal with a specific topic and to critically address the identified research question. Review of literature, and personal interpretation are among the main criteria for the teacher’s judgement. During the oral exam, students must be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the book/books and be able to discuss their/its contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Students who attend course's classes are required to: - actively participate in the class discussions concerning the assigned readings. 20% of the final grade is based on that. - write a final paper (5,000 word long) that deals with a specific topic chosen by each student among those covered in the course. The final paper has to be submitted before the oral exam. The paper corresponds to 50% of the final grade. - take an oral exam. 30% of the final grade is based on the oral exam. Students who do not attend course's classes will take an oral exam. The final grade is based only on the oral exam.

Alla fine del corso, studenti/esse avranno maturato la capacità di distinguere e analizzare i fondamenti della dottrina islamica, e la sua evoluzione nel tempo e nei diversi contesti geografici in cui l’Islam si è diffuso.

Alla fine del corso, gli studenti avranno maturato la capacità di analizzare criticamente le principali tendenze politiche, sociali, culturali ed economiche accadute nel Vicino Oriente nel corso del XX secolo.

Per seguire il corso in maniera più proficua, gli studenti dovrebbero avere conoscenze relative alla storia internazionale del XX secolo.

Il corso, di 36 ore divise in 18 lezioni. Le lezioni sono frontali, ma è richiesta a studenti/sse una partecipazione attiva alle discussioni che avverranno in classe sulla base di argomenti tratti nel manuale e di una serie di letture assegnate in aula.
Il corso inizia il 24 settembre.
Il ricevimento è il martedì dalle 10.30 alle 11.30 ma si consiglia di inviare un'email alla docente per avere conferma della disponibilità.

The course, divided into 18 lessons, will address the following topics:
HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST
This course provides students with a historical, political, economic, social overview of the modern Middle East. After a brief introduction on the beginning of Islam, the history of the Caliphates and the history of the Ottoman Empire, this course covers the chronological framework of the 20th century, focusing in particular on two main periods: the European presence in the region, starting with the British arrival in Egypt until the Suez War (1882-1956), and the Cold War, starting with the Eisenhower doctrine (1957) up to the first Gulf War (1991). Classes focus on the main "actors" of region, such as States (Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Israel/Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Gulf monarchies), regional organisations (The Arab League, the GCC), trans-national movements and groups, and resources (water and oil).

I frequentanti, a cui è richiesta un’attiva partecipazione alle lezioni, sosterranno l'esame in forma orale; tuttavia è prevista la possibilità di presentare all'esame orale una relazione scritta. In tal caso gli studenti frequentanti dovranno scrivere un paper di una lunghezza compresa tra le 4,000 e le 5,000 parole (note incluse, bibliografia esclusa), su un argomento da concordare preventivamente con la docente. Tale paper dovrà essere mandato via e-mail all’indirizzo mail renata.pepicelli@unipi.it improrogabilmente entro due settimane esatte dalla data in cui lo studente sosterrà la prova orale. Tale elaborato verrà discusso nel corso della prova orale che verterà su tutti gli argomenti trattati a lezione e nei volumi indicati in bibliografia.
I non frequentanti sosterranno la prova d’esame in forma orale su tutti gli argomenti trattati nei volumi nella lista dei testi obbligatori e che fanno riferimento ai contenuti del corso.

1) la frequenza attiva alle lezioni, che conterà per il 20% del voto.

Tale elaborato verrà discusso nel corso della prova orale, che lo studente sarà libero di sostenere in uno qualsiasi degli appelli di esame fissati dal docente.

Attending students, are required to have active participation in classrooms and to take examination in an oral form. However, it is possible to replace the oral examination with a written report. In this case, the attending student will have to write a paper with a length between 4,000 to 5,000 words (including notes, and excluding bibliography), on a topic to be agreed on in advanced with the instructor. This paper should be sent via e-mail to the address renata.pepicelli@unipi.it, two weeks prior to the date on which the student will take the oral examination.
