Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Acquisition of the fundamentals of natural processes occurring on the Earth's surface, in the atmosphere, and in the hydrosphere; modeling mechanisms that take place on the Earth's surface, according to their geographical distribution. Understanding of the dynamics of the Sun-Earth system and its effects on the climate system. Acquisition of the basic knowledge on cartography, on the different reference systems and knowledge of the Italian cartographic production (IGM and CTR). Acquisition of criteria and methods for reading topographic maps and applications cartometry.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam
  • Periodic written tests

Further information:
The successful completion of the written exam of Laboratory of Cartography I is the necessary condition for the access to the final exam of the course. Periodic written tests are scheduled.

Work placement
A consistent part of the course is focused on practical exercises (Cartography laboratory) regarding: reading of topographic maps, determination of map scale, distances and areas; calculation of inclination of the slopes and elevation of a point. Construction of topographic profiles, construction of longitudinal profiles of rivers. Delimitation of the river basins. Construction of hypsographic curves. Hierarchy of drainage network. One day field experience is planned
