Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have basic knowledge, relevant for a biologist working on sanitary-environmental plants, on: - pollution phenomena of water, soil and air; - the main techniques for handling, and treatment of primary water, wastewater, solid waste and contaminated soils; - the main purification techniques for surface and groundwater. Additionally, he/she will have the opportunity to visit two civil/industrial wastewater / solid waste treatment plants by two technical site-visits
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the course contents and the reading matter using the appropriate terminology within a final oral exam.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
The general evaluation will be performed by a final oral exam.

Syllabus
Characterization of natural water and wastewater. Main pollution phenomena of water bodies. Deoxygenation and eutrophication. Main environmental legislation in Italy and Europe. Treatments of civil wastewater: preliminary treatments (screening, grit removal, primary sedimentation); secondary biological treatment (biological kinetics; activated sludge treatments; attached growth treatments; natural treatments; advanced combined treatments). Treatment of wastewater sludge: stabilization, dewatering, options of final destination and recycle. Unitary water treatments and purification treatment trains for surface and groundwater: chemical oxidation, coagulation, precipitation. Adsorption. Disinfection. Sand and membrane filtration. Solid waste management: characterization, collection, reuse and recycling, composting, incineration, landfilling, energy exploitation. Remediation of polluted soils and groundwater: Legislation, site assessment, risk analysis, in situ - ex situ treatments.
Bibliography
Basic reading will be provided as downloadable lecture notes. Further bibliography will be indicated.
