Conoscenze

Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to: structural and metamorphic aspects of crystalline basement; deformation style and metamorphic evolution recorded by basement rocks in collisional margin; role of magmas in deformation processes in the middle and upper crust: analytical methodologies suited to investigate crystalline rocks

Assessment criteria of knowledge

During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the data and results

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Written report

Further information:
The final exam is based primarily on oral presentation of in-depth study of a relevant aspect among those discussed during the course

Skills

At the end of the course the students will be able to identify and examine the problems related to the tectono-metanmorphic evolution of the crystalline basements through the use of different methodologies.

Assessment criteria of skills

The assesment of skill will be test during the final exams by oral presentation of a written report on some selected geological aspects of crystalline basements.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The student will acquire skill on structural and petrographical analysis in areas of polyphasic tectono-metamorphic evolution.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Drafting of a written report with critical comment on the issues addressed during the course

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Associazioni metamorfiche e relazioni blastesi metamorfiche-deformazione. Circolazione di fluidi e struttutre tetoniche. Metodi di geotermobarometria, percorsi P-T-t, deformazione in ambiente orogenico, evoluzione termo-meccanica in regime collisionale (thrusting simple shear, homogeneous pure shear, thrusting and magma emplacement), meccanismi di esumazione in ambiente collisionale ed estensionale, processi metamorfici associati alle fasi esumative, esempi geologici Alpi occidentali e catena Varisica. Magmatismo sintettonico esempi naturali, ruolo dei magmi come marker dei processi tettonici.

Syllabus

The course provides notions on the main structural and metamorphic aspects of crystalline basement units as well as magmatic rocks in collisional and extesional tectonic setting. Main issues are: style of deformation, progressive deformation, relation with metamorphic processes and PTt path in collisional belts; shear zone and fluid circulation; mode of exhumation of metamorphic units (basement nappes and core complex); syntectonic magmatism and role of magma in deformation processes; geological examples from western Alps and European Variscan Belt. Syntectonic magmatism, natural examples and the role of magmas as marker of tectonic processes
