Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the following arguments: electronic structure of atoms, periodic properties of elements, chemical bonds, gases and gas laws, solutions, bases of thermodynamics, chemical equilibria. He/she will also be able to solve numerical problems on these topics and the fundamentals of stoichiometry.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- In the written exam (2,5 hours, 4 essay questions), the student must demonstrate the ability to solve, with critical awareness, numerical problems on the topics illustrated by the teacher during the course. - With the oral presentation the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam

Syllabus
The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the fundamental laws of chemistry and to their applications to biological sciences. The following arguments will be treated in detail: bases of stoichiometry, electronic structure of atoms, periodic properties of elements, chemical bonds, gases and gas laws, solutions, bases of thermodynamics, chemical equilibria and applications to acid-base, solubility and electrochemical equilibrium reactions.
