Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the response of an ecosystem impacted by anthropogenic activity, to discriminate geogenic and anthropogenic sources of pollutants and to investigate the fate of harmful and potentially harmful elements in the environment. Lastly, the student will be aware of innovative approaches in tracing the origin and evolution of contamination using isotopic approaches
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be evaluated by discussing the course content. The application of geochemical modeling to environmental issues will be discussed, including addressing practical examples of contaminated sites and the possible remediation schemes.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures

Syllabus
The course provides notions in terms of the fundamental relationships that control the reactivity of an ecosystem, including mineral phases dissolution reactions and the element release to the aqueous phase, weathering processes and soil profile formation, trace elements scavenging and release through adsorption-desorption processes, environmental risk assessment and the possible remediation strategies
