Tema del Corso. "The New Way of Words - Alle origini della filosofia analitica del linguaggio".
Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze relative a questioni logiche, ontologiche, semantiche ed epistemologiche che hanno caratterizzato l'emergere del paradigma analitico della filosofia del linguaggio agli inizi del Novecento. Tra le quali: (a) la critica dell'idealismo (assoluto e trascendentale) e dello psicologismo filosofico; (b) la progressiva emergenza della centralità del linguaggio e della "facoltà simbolica" dell'uomo nell'orizzonte filosofico dell'epistemologia e della filosofia della scienza; (c) il nesso fondante per la nuova filosofia del linguaggio tra forma logica, concetto di verità e spiegazione del significato linguistico; (d) la discussione radicale sull'apriori che ha coinvolto presupposti non solo logico-semantici, come la struttura soggetto-predicato, ma anche logico-ontologici come la distinzione particolare-universale.
Course title. "The New Way of Words - At the Origins of the Analytic Philosophy of Language".
The student will acquire knowledge about the logical, ontological, semantic and epistemological issues that characterized the emergence of the analytic paradigm in the philosophy of language in the early 1900s. Among these: (a) the criticism of (absolute and transcendental) idealism and philosophical psychologism; (b) the progressive emergence of the centrality of language and the "symbolic faculty" of man on the philosophical horizon of epistemology and philosophy of science; (c) the relation between logical form, the concept of truth and the explanation of linguistic meaning that is fundamental to the new philosophy of language; (d) the radical discussion about the apriori, whose premises are not only logico-semantic, like the subject-predicate structure, but also logico-ontological, like the distinction particular-universal.
La verifica delle conoscenze avviene attraverso un colloquio con il docente durante la prova d'esame orale.
The knowledges acquired by the student will be assessed during the oral exam.
Lo studente sarà orientato sia alla comprensione del ruolo centrale del linguaggio nel pensiero filosofico contemporaneo che al raffinamento della capacità di analizzare approfonditamente un testo filosofico.
The student will be guided both to understand of the central role of language in contemporary philosophical thought and to improve his/her ability to analyze a philosophical paper.
Per l'accertamento delle capacità lo studente dovrà svolgere in sede d'esame orale una presentazione in powerpoint relativa a un aspetto tematico rilevante tra quelli discussi nel corso.
During the oral exam the student will give a powerpoint presentation of one of the relevant thematic aspect discussed in the course.
Lo studente potrà acquisire maggiore familiarità con i requisiti richiesti per una ricerca filosofica scientificamente adeguata.
The student of Philosophy will become more familiar with the requirements of a scientifically adequate philosophical research.
Parte della letteratura in lingua inglese e preparazione di elaborati costituiscono elementi per verificare l'acquisizione di una maggiore familiarità con i requisiti richiesti per una comprensione e/o produzione scientifica e/o una professionalizzazione di portata internazionale.
The fact that part of the bibliography of the course is in English and the fact that students are required to prepare papers during the course allow to assess the acquisition on their part of the familiarity with the scientific understanding/production and the ability to internationally professionalize.
Non sono richieste particolari propedeuticità. Naturalmente una certa conoscenza di base logica può agevolare il percorso formativo. Tale conoscenza di base sarà comunque fornita da una parte del corso.
None, however some basics in logic may simplify the educational path. Part of the course will be devoted to such basics anyway.

Il corso sarà diviso in un tre Moduli Tematici che saranno dedicati all'analisi dei saggi. I testi discussi saranno reperibili nella pagina del corso sulla piattaforma Moodle.
PRIMO MODULO (Prof. Carlo Marletti) / Linguaggio, forma logica e ontologia: Moore, Russell, Wittgenstein, Ramsey
Il modulo è orientato in prima istanza a delineare lo sfondo teoretico, epistemologico e filosofico-linguistico nel quale emerge la nuova filosofia del linguaggio tra fine '800 e primissimi decenni del '900 (diciamo nella fase pre-positivismo logico). Si passerà poi a vedere - anche con l'esame dei testi - come tale emergenza si presenti in un importante intreccio tra questioni logiche, metafisico-ontologiche, semantiche ed epistemologiche che va ben al di là della ricostruzione neo-empirista (sostanzialmente) rilasciatane dal neopositivismo logico.
SECONDO MODULO (Prof. Enrico Moriconi) / Frege su logica e significato
Tema del modulo è l'apporto centrale fornito dagli scritti in esame di Gottlob Frege alla contemporanea filosofia del linguaggio di orientamento analitico, in ordine specialmente a: la dismissione dello schema tradizionale soggetto-predicato; il ruolo della nuova forma logica nell'analisi del significato linguistico; il carattere fondazionale del nesso tra verità e significato; l'emergenza dello schema senso/denotazione per la teoria del significato; la caratterizzazione antipsicologista di concetti e pensieri; la frattura con la concezione rappresentazionalista del significato delle formazioni simboliche.
TERZO MODULO (Prof. Giacomo Turbanti) / Russell su linguaggio ed epistemologia
Discuteremo alcune delle le implicazioni del tentativo di Bertrand Russell di utilizzare la forma logica come chiave d'accesso alla struttura ontologica del mondo e di impostare una teoria della conoscenza empirista sulla base di questa concezione. Ci confronteremo con la sua teoria delle descrizioni, la decostruzione della nozione modalmente robusta di causa, la sua ontologia dei fatti e il problema della loro conoscenza.
The New Way of Words - At the Origins of the Analytical Philosophy of Language
The course will be divided in three modules that will be devoted to the analysis of the essay. The texts will be available on the course website on Moodle.
FIRST MODULE (Prof. Carlo Marletti) / Language, logical form, and ontology: Moore, Russell, Wittgenstein, Ramsey
The module aims first at describing the theoretic, epistemological and philosophical-linguistic background, in which the new philosophy of language emerged between the end of the XIX century and the first decades of the XX century (the pre-logical-positivism period). Then it will address - also with the analysis of the texts - how such an emergence presents itself within an entanglement of logical- metaphysical, semantical and epistemological issues that is more complex than the neo-empricist characterization (essentially) provided by logical positivism.
SECOND MODULE (Prof. ENRICO MORICONI) / Frege on logic and meaning
The topic of the module is the crucial contribution provided by the texts of Gottlob Frege to the analytic philosophy of language, with special regard to: the rejection of the traditional subject-predicate scheme; the role of the new logical form in the analysis of linguistic meaning; the foundational character of the relation between truth and meaning; the emergence of the scheme sense/denotation for the theory of meaning; the antipsychologistic characterization of concepts and thouhgs; the refusal of the representationalist conception of the meaning of symbolic formations.
THIRD MODULE (Prof. Giacomo Turbanti) / Russell on language and epistemology
We will discuss some of the logical, semantic, epistemic and ontological questions with which Bertrand Russell struggled in the process of developing his perspective on logical atomism. Among these in particular we will address his theory of descriptions and the problem of reference, the deconstruction of the modally robust notion of cause, the metaphysical implication of conceiving the world as what makes the sentences of first-order logic true.

L'esame è costituito da una prova orale nella quale lo studente sarà a colloquio con i docenti.
La prova orale è avviata dalla presentazione del testo in powerpoint preparato dallo studente su un tema rilevante del corso. Segue poi un colloquio relativo alle conoscenza acquisite dallo studente sui testi d'esame e l'eventuale bibliografia di contorno.
The exam is oral. The student will be examined by the teachers.
The colloquium will start with the power point presentation on one of the relevant themes of the course. The rest of the colloquium will assess the student's knowledge of the course bibliography.
