Conoscenze

  • basi di Scienza ed Ingegneria dei Materiali, rilevanti per la Bionica;
  • comprensione delle varie classi di materiali, la loro struttura multiscala, composizione, proprietà strutturali e funzionali;
  • comprensione di alcune tra le principali tecniche di (micro)fabbricazione/manufacturing e di caratterizzaione dei materiali;
  • concetti avanzati e sviluppi recenti della Scienza dei Materiali e delle Nanotecnologie, all’interfaccia tra Chimica, Fisica, Ingegneria e Biologia;
  • impiego di materiali innovativi in Bionica.
Knowledge

The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge on:

  • basics of Materials Science & Engineering as relevant for Bionics Engineering.
  • understanding of the various classes of materials, their multiscale structure, composition, structural and functional properties;
  • understanding of some of the main techniques for (micro)fabrication/manufacturing and characterization of materials;
  • advanced concepts and recent developments of modern Materials Science, Nanotechnology, lying at the interface between Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Biology;
  • use of innovative materials in Bionics.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
  • During the lessons the teacher will invite the students to interact by posing them questions/tests to assess the acquisition of knowledge.
  • In some lessons “hands-on sessions” are planned. During these sessions some selected materials will be provided, to be touched and observed by students. After a first inspection the teacher will ask the students to roughly describe the materials, roughly predict their properties, to classify them. These sessions will be used by the teacher to assess if and how the theoretical concepts have been grasped by the majority of students and if they can relate those concepts to real materials.
  • Students will be subdivided into 2-3 people groups. Each group will receive as assignment to provide a bibliographic survey and a seminar about a selected topic (i.e. recent developments of some specific application or specific material in Bionics Engineering). The seminars by students groups will be held in front of all other students during the last weeks of the course. The evaluation of these seminars will concur in the final assessment of knowledge, together with final oral exam (see below).
  • A final oral exam will be used to assess the knowledge gained in the course about all the topics.
Capacità

Al termine del corso lo studente:

  • sarà in grado di riconoscere le principali classi di materiali per la bionica, la loro struttura, composizione, proprietà e le tecniche di fabbricazione/caratterizzazione ad essi collegati;
  • sarà in grado di orientarsi nella letteratura scientifica riguardante i materiali tradizionali e innovativi e il loro impiego in bionica;
Skills

At the end of the course the student:

  • will be able to identify the main classes of materials for Bionics, their structure, composition, properties and the related fabrication/characterization techniques;
  • will be able be able to orient him/herself in the scientific literature dealing with traditional/innovative materials in Bionics;
  • will be able to identify the suitable materials types for a specific application.
Assessment criteria of skills
  • In some lessons “hands-on sessions” are planned. During these sessions some selected materials will be provided to students. The teacher will ask the students to hypothesize their technological uses or to suggest feasible (micro)fabrication and characterization techniques. These sessions will be used by the teacher to assess if and how the students can relate the acquired theoretical concepts to real technological uses.
  • During the bibliographic survey/seminar work (in groups) part of preparatory work will be to perform an updated survey of the state of art in a specific topic. To prepare students to this task, some practical instructions will be given on how to perform a bibliographic research and how to use the main software/online tools for bibliography management and sharing. These activities will be used for assessing the ability of the student to orient him/herself in the scientific literature.
Comportamenti

Lo studente potrà acquisire sensibilità riguardo a:

  • riconoscimento delle varie scale di strutturazione dei materiali (macro,meso, micro,nano) e come essi concorrano a definirne le proprietà macroscopiche;

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

To profitably attend the course  basic competences in physics, chemistry, and materials science are required. In addition -even if not strictly needed- useful competences concern mechanics, electronics, optics and biology.

Indicazioni metodologiche
Teaching methods
  • The lessons will be carried out by using slides in English, the blackboard will be used for simple schemes or mathematical derivations, video, animations, and online resources will be used in some cases.
  • Hands-on sessions will involve the inspection of some real materials relevant for the course (in some cases observation with optical microscope too). Based on those observations then the discussion/in depth analysis will be open.
  • Slides of lessons, together with additional reference materials (research papers, etc.) will be made available to all students attending the course as pdf files in a Microsoft Teams group and at the link http://www.bionicsengineering.it/Courses_PrivateArea.
  • A state of art survey on selected topics will be carried out by students subdivided into groups. As much as possible the composition of groups will be made heterogeneous (students having different backgrounds), with the aim to boost the interdisciplinarity and to educate students to inter-discipline cross-talk. This group work will be preparatory for the final presentation to be held in class (or online) in front of classmates at the end of semester. A Q&A session by classmates will follow each presentation.
  • The teacher-student interaction out of lessons will be carried out mainly by email or by setting on demand programmed meetings.

All the activities of the course will be carried out in English.
