Popular poetry and literary experimentation in the "Romantic Heidelberg"
In the first fifteen years of the nineteenth century - in conjunction with the Napoleonic wars that shaken the structure of Germany - matured a phase of Romanticism that focused on the study of the popular and national past, presented polemically as "natural", and at the same time enhanced that experimentation on forms that had already been initiated, on a speculative and literary level, in the previous phase of Romanticism. This makes that phase of German Romanticism, which is called Hochromantik, an integral part of a culture of modernity par excellence, since the rediscovery of literary sources, a mirror of deep as well as uneven cultural traditions, takes place in the sign of their re-elaboration and hybridization on a literary level, in order to promote the widest possible circulation among contemporaries.
The university town of Heidelberg was in those years a laboratory of philosophical, poetic and philological research, from which the gigantic project for the collection of popular traditions began, culminating in the publication of Des Kanben Wunderhorn (1805-1808) and the Kinder-und Hausmärchen dei Grimm (first edition 1812).
But above all, Heidelberg became the collection point for some of the most interesting and radical writers of Romanticism: Arnim, Brentano and Eichendorff.
