Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The course aims to provide students with the historical and cultural knowledge to develop independent skills in critical reading and interpretation of the architectural work analyzed in its original context. Particular attention is given to the study of architectural theories and language of the orders at the origin of all western architecture starting from the classical era until the nineteenth century. The program is intended to provide the necessary skills to enable the student to look at and read the architectural work in the language of the era in which it was conceived.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be evaluated for their ability to discuss the main contents of the course using appropriate terminology. - Graphic exercises conducted during the course in order to enable the student to acquire autonomous and personal skills in critical reading and interpretation of the architectural work will be assessed - During the test, both written and oral, the student must be able to clearly and correctly present the topics, to analyze the architectural work with property of expression and contextualize it in the larger view of the artistic movements of the time

Syllabus
The course examines the European architectural production and more generally that of the entire Mediterranean area through a time range from the classical period to the Middle Ages. Works, artists and patrons will be connected and examined in the context of the cultural, social and economic development of every age. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the techniques of construction of buildings and the study of the used materials, the critical success of the works and their influence on later generations even in the modern era.
