Scopo principale del corso di Lingua inglese II è quello di fornire le conoscenze relative alle caratteristiche della lingua inglese a livello sintagmatico, frasale, e testuale, con riferimento ai vari ambiti discorsivi e situazioni comunicative. Il corso prevede anche il raggiungimento del livello B2+ del Quadro Comune Europeo di conoscenza della lingua. A questo fine, lo studente potrà, come parte del proprio lavoro individuale, integrare la propria preparazione seguendo le esercitazioni (lettorato) organizzate dal CLI presso il Dipartimento per il livello B2-B2+.
The second-year English course aims to provide knowledge of the characteristics of the English language on the syntactic, structural, and textual levels, with particular reference to various discourse domains and communicative situations. The course also requires students to reach the B2+ of the European Framework. Towards this objective, as part of their individual work students can attend practical language classes (lettorato) organized by CLI for the Department for the B2-B2+ level.
Esame scritto e colloquio orale che vertono sugli argomenti del corso. L’esame scritto, composto da domande chiuse di varia tipologia, si svolge online sulla piattaforma Moodle. Il superamento dell’esame scritto è un prerequisito per poter sostenere il colloquio orale, che consisterà un qualche domanda per approfondire gli aspetti teorici trattati nel corso.
A written and an oral exam that cover all course topics. The written exam is administered online on Moodle and contains various question types. A passing mark on the online written exam is a prerequisite to sit for the oral exam, which will consistent of a few questions focusing on the theoretical aspects of the course.
Essere capaci di 1) distinguere e analizzare le strutture della lingua inglese a livello sintattico, 2) riconoscere e analizzare vari tipi di testi a livello strutturale, discorsivo, interpersonale e retorico, anche nell'ambito di varie situazioni comunicative, e 3) essere in grado di comprendere e produrre comunicazioni scritte e orali in lingua inglese a livello B2+ del Quadro Comune Europeo.
Be able to 1) distinguish and analyze the structural features of English language sentences on the syntactic level, 2) analyze various types of texts at the structural, discursive, interpersonal, and rhetorical levels in various communicative situations, and 3) be able to understand and produce both written and oral communication in English at the B2+ level of the European Framework.

Dopo aver superato l’esame del corso, gli studenti saranno in grado di comprendere e produrre testi scritti e orali che trattano argomenti linguistici (a livello B2+), nonché di analizzare testi originali applicando le conoscenze acquisite.
After passing the course exam, students will be able to produce written and oral texts that deal with topics of linguistics (at the B2+ level), and analyze original texts by applying their acquired knowledge.
I comportamenti saranno verificati tramite la presentazione e discussione dei testi analizzati durante le lezioni e in sede dell’esame scritto seguito dal colloquio orale conclusivo.
Behaviours will be verified through the presentation and discussion of analyzed texts during lessons, and during the final written and oral exams.

Lezioni frontali (erogate in lingua inglese) che comprendono attività di gruppo per esercizi e analisi dei testi. Durante le lezioni, le attività verranno supportate dall’ uso dei materiali audiovisivi e della piattaforma Moodle.
Classroom lectures (in English) that also include group activities for exercises and text analysis. During the lectures, activities will be supported with audiovisual materials and the Moodle platform.
Il corso di Lingua Inglese II si intitola "From phrases to texts to discourse" e si svolge nel primo semestre. Gli argomenti includeranno la sintassi della lingua inglese, con particolare riferimento agli aspetti formali, funzionali e fraseologici. Inoltre, si approfondiranno le caratteristiche dei testi, soffermandosi su vari temi quali la coesione e la coerenza, le tipologie testuali, gli elementi interpersonali e retorici dei testi, nonché i linguaggi specialistici utilizzati in vari ambiti discorsivi, ad esempio il giornalismo, la pubblicità, la comunicazione interculturale, la comunicazione aziendale e i social media.
The second-year English course is entitled "From phrases to texts to discourse" and takes place during the first semester. It introduces the features of English syntax, with particular attention to formal, functional, and phraseological aspects. It also includes features of English texts, focusing on topics such as cohesion and coherence, text types, interpersonal and rhetorical elements of texts, as well as characteristics of texts used in special communicative situations such as journalism, advertising, intercultural communication, business communication and social media.

Il corso prevede un esame scritto sulla piattaforma Moodle e un colloquio orale. Entrambe le parti vertono sui contenuti del corso. L’esame scritto è composto da domande chiuse di varia tipologia. Il superamento dell'esame scritto è un prerequisito per poter sostenere il colloquio orale, che consisterà in qualche domanda per approfondire gli aspetti teorici del corso. Per i frequentanti (70% delle presenze), ci sarà una prova in itinere sostitutiva dell’esame scritto se superata.
Gli studenti potranno sostenere l'esame scritto relativo al corso del docente anche prima di aver superato le prove relative alle esercitazioni (lettorato), in gennaio o febbraio. Nel caso in cui ritengano di possedere il livello B2+ nell’abilità dello speaking, potranno sostenere anche l’orale; in alternativa sosterranno l’orale a giugno dopo aver superato le prove delle esercitazioni. Qualora il livello di spoken English fosse adeguato per superare l'esame del docente, gli studenti dovranno comunque fare la verifica delle esercitazioni per accertare le competenze nelle quattro abilità linguistiche (leggere, scrivere, ascoltare, parlare). Chi supera lo scritto su Moodle e viene valutato negativamente all’orale, dovrà ripetere anche lo scritto. Il risultato dell’esame del corso ha validità di TRE anni.
Le esercitazioni a livello B2-B2+ sono svolte da Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) per due semestri e mirano a potenziare tutte le quattro abilità linguistiche (cognomi A-K - dott.ssa Lynam; cognomi L-Z - dott.ssa McSorley). La verifica delle abilità acquisite si articolerà in diverse prove: reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension, e speaking. Il livello di competenza B2+ è valutato in termini di A, B, C. Il livello C consiste nel raggiungimento delle abilità minime previste dal CEFR per il livello (es. A = solido B2+ in tutte le abilità e magari in alcune C1; B = solido B2+ su tutte le abilità; C = B2+ con qualche debolezza specifica di lieve entità). Ulteriori informazioni sulle modalità dello svolgimento delle prove verranno fornite sul sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it, dove gli studenti possono iscriversi alle prove e prendere visione dei risultato al sito. La validità del risultato positivo delle prove è DUE anni accademici (la stessa delle certificazioni internazionali riconosciute).
Possono essere esonerati dal sostenere le prove di lettorato coloro i quali sono in possesso delle certificazioni:
- Cambridge FCE (Grade A o B) o certificato superiore
- IELTS: punteggio 6.0 o superiore
- Toefl IBT: punteggio 80 o superiore
se conseguite da non più di DUE anni o gli studenti che risultino in possesso del livello B2+ dal placement test iniziale. Questi studenti dovranno sostenere solo l’esame con Prof. Crawford. L'eventuale certificazione internazionale deve essere presentata in sede della verbalizzazione dell'esame.
Il voto finale del corso potrà essere verbalizzato solo durante i periodi relativi alle sessioni d'esame secondo il calendario accademico e durante l'orario di ricevimento delle Prof.ssa Crawford. Consultare Unimap per il calendario e le istruzioni per chiedere un appuntamento per la verbalizzazione.
Assessment will consist of a written exam and an oral exam. The content of both will be based on the topics covered in the course. The written exam with various types of closed questions will be administered on Moodle. A passing mark on the written exam is a prerequisite to sit for the oral exam. For attending students (70% of lessons), there will be an assessment administered during the course that can substitute the written exam in case of a passing mark.
Students may sit for the written course exam in the winter session even before passing the practical language tests (lettorato). If students believe that they already possess a B2+ level for speaking skills, they may also sit for the oral course exam in the winter session; otherwise they must wait until the summer session. Even if students have a level of spoken English sufficient for passing the course oral exam, they must still take the practical language tests to verify a B2+ level of competence for the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking). If students pass the written exam on Moodle, but then do not pass the oral exam, they must also repeat the written exam. The final result of the course exam is valid for THREE years.
The practical language classes at the B2-B2+ level are taught by language instructors (CEL) and span over the first and the second semesters, aiming to develop language skills for the four language abilities (last names A-K - dott.ssa Lynam; last names L-Z - dott.ssa McSorley). Assessment is by means of tests articulated in reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking. The B2+ competence level is assessed in terms of A, B, C. Level C corresponds to the minimum level indicated in the CEFR (A = solid B2+ in all abilities and even C1 in some; B = solid B2+ on all abilities; C = B2+ with some specific weaknesses of a minor nature). Further information about how the tests will be administered will be available on https://elearning.cli.unipi.it, where students can sign up for the tests and view their results. Test results are valid for two years (the same as for recognized international certificates).
Students who have obtained one of the certificates listed below within two years prior to the conclusion of the exam, or students who are in possession of the B2+ level from the initial placement test, may be exempted from taking the language tests. These students will only have to take the exam with Prof. Crawford. International certificates must be presented when students register their final course mark.
- Cambridge FCE (Grade A or B) o higher level certificate
- IELTS: score of 6.0 or higher
- Toefl IBT: score of 80 or higher
The final mark for the course can be recorded only during the official exam periods of the academic calendar and during office hours of Prof. Crawford. See Unimap for the office hours calendar and instructions for requesting an appointment to record the mark.
