Knowledge
Acquire the basic knowledge of crystallography and structural, morphological and physical properties of minerals. Knowledge of theory of optics for crystallographic study in thin sections of minerals and rocks. Identification of the minerals most frequently found in nature, through the observation of the main physical properties verifiable in hand specimens. Acquire the key concepts of the X-ray crystallography, laboratory practice to get the interpretation of the experimental data and the subsequent solution of simple problems of identification of minerals in powder diffractometry. Acquire the ability to correctly recalculate the crystal chemical formula of a mineral.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.
- During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.
- The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed.
