The course will benefit from the participation of a Visiting Professor of the Universidade Nova of Lisbon, prof. Andrea Ragusa (IELT-FCSH-UNL).
Forms of Portuguese-Brazilian modernity: poetry, prose and critical culture, between Eça, Antero and Machado de Assis
Throughout the nineteenth century, Portuguese and Brazilian writers formed a literary community within which exchange, criticism and mutual influences produced a rich fabric of works, each with its own unique characteristics. If in Portugal the "Questão Coimbrã", a literary and moral controversy, opens up a new panorama in the Portuguese literary system of the nineteenth century, placing the so-called "Escola Nova" (and its precursors, in particular Garrett, Lopes de Mendonça and Herculano), the same happens in Brazil, where the critical turn (Álvares de Azeredo, Machado de Assis) is accompanied by the lyrical explosion of poets like Fagundes Varela and Castro Alves. The course aims to follow the contacts between the intellectuals of the two shores of the ocean, especially between Eça de Queirós and Machado de Assis, to outline the concept of critical culture and to define its essential role within the Portuguese and Brazilian literary system in the second half of the nineteenth century. Among the authors examined: Alexandre Herculano, Lopes de Mendonça, Antero de Quental, Eça de Queirós, Oliveira Martins, Machado de Assis, Castro Alves.
