Knowledge
After a short remind of systematic organic chemistry, the course takes into consideration the main classes of organic pollutants, discussing their origins and fate, their chemistry both as synthetic precedures, if any, and environmental degradation processes. Finally, the analytical tools for identification and characterization of such pollutants in various environmental matrices will be described, with particular emphasis on mass spectrometry. The student will be able to prepare a relation on the problems related to a particular pollutant or class of pollutants.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the relation contents using the appropriate terminology. He should present the data as it is normally performed in industrial breefings. In alternative, in case of classic oral examination, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
At student's choice, the candidate can prepare a relation on a particular pollutant or class of pollutants, as she/he will possibly will have to prepare in their future work experiences. The relation should cover three main sectors: the chemistry of the pollutant(s), their implications with the environment and the analytical methods used for their determination in environmental matrices.
