Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students are expected to acquire: 1) an advanced training on the methods of Earth Sciences applied to the study of the processes leading to the formation of archaeological sites; 2) the ability for the recognition of archaeological sites; 3) the ability for applying the principles of stratigraphy to the archaeological contexts; 4) the knowledge of the main techniques for geoarchaeological investigation. Finally, the student will have knowledge of the diachronic evolution of the relationship between man and the environment.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material. The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Syllabus
Introduction to Geoarchaeology, generality and methods. Relationships between geology and cultural anthropology, the geomorphological context. Climates, landforms and settlements, the remains of the material cultures and the environmental context. Sedimentary processes, deposition, and weathering. Notes on climatic and environmental changes, global change. Man as a geomorphologic and sedimentologic agent; anthropic soils and stratigraphy. Archaeological deposits, formation processes, techniques of excavation and exploration. Uniformitarianism criteria in the study of sediments, soils, and archaeological deposits. Elements of archaeological stratigraphy: inheritance, land used for settlement, schedules, weathering, pollution. The archaeological sites as archives for reconstructing the history of the environment and of human occupational history. Human-environment interactions. Geomorphologic techniques for reconstructing past landscapes.

Work placement
The course provides practical activity conducted in the field in key Archeological sites and 5 day trips for describing the geoarcheological and geomorphological context of selected case studies. Addional work placement GIS elaboration, shallow drillings, and sedimentary training can be eventually planned after the course for developing dissertation topics.
