Learning outcomes
Knowledge
At the end of the course the student will have a broad, if shallow, overview of some of the several links between physics (and mathematics) and music, the basics of physical acoustics and should be able to learn and explore in more directions such connections.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
The student has the option of presenting a short oral discussion on an agreed subject of his/her choice as the first part of the oral exam.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • individual study

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures

Syllabus
Introduction to acoustics: oscillations, spectra and Fourier analysis, autocorrelation, noise. Mechanical oscillators and coupling, normal modes. The simple vibrating string and its limits, string instruments and inharmonicity, Helmholtz motion. Vibrating membranes and drums. Sound propagation in air, impedance, wind instruments and the voice. Introduction to psychoacoustics, loudness and pitch. Mathematics of musical scales. Digitization of sound and basics of lossy compression.
