|
The student who successfully complete the course will have the ability to use the category of gender in the study of the early modern history, especially as regards the issues of male and female roles in the family and the charity institutions, and how charity helped redefine gender relations.
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.

Family and welfare provision in Early Modern Europe: The course covers the role of family and kinship as sources of social security and analyses the results of comparative work on early modern Europe, paying special attention to the relative weight of religious and structurals factors. We will focus on the reform of poor relief in Protestant and Catholic lands, and on the use of charity institutions by women and men, paying attention to gender, age, and civil status differences. A part of the course will be dedicated to the child abandonment and the problems of illegitimate paternity. During the period of French domination, the traditional practice of verification of paternity, which in the past led to the woman's reputation being partially restored, was made illegal. At the same time ecclesiastical and secular authorities conducted a vigorous campaign denouncing unwed pregnant women and persuading them to abandon the fruit of their sin.
Lettura e discussione in aula di fonti e documenti forniti dalla docente.
