Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students are expected to acquire: solid knowledge of the genetic and molecular basis of mendelian traits and about the characterization of polygenic and multifactorial traits; knowledge on population based genotype and allele frequencies calculus, of Hardy-Weinberg law verification and of factors affecting the HW equilibrium; knowledge of gene structure and expression and ability to search fundamental gene information on genomic databases;
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exam (3 hours, theorical and practical exercises), the student must demonstrate the knowledge of the main topics presented during the course, the ability to solve specific problems on population genetics, the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities on genome databases carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
Origin of genetic and phenotipic variability. Genetic structure of populations and evolutionary factors. Genetical theory of natural selection and neutral theory of molecular evolution. Evolution of phenotipic traits. Epigenetic inheritance and evolution. Evolution of genes and genomes. Search in genomic databases. Convergence of advanced studies of molecular and developmental genetics with the general principles of neo-darwinian evolution.
