Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to understand the different analtyical problems related to the scientific characterisation of works of art, starting with the problems related to the materials degradation and conservation, to the analytical challenges related to the multi material characterisation of such complex samples as those collected from paintings and polychrome objects. He or she will learn how the same analytical technique can be applied with different instrumental set-ups or as the final step of different analytical protocols in order to gain complemetary information on a sample from a painting or polychrome object
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and should denmonstrate his/her ability to select the right analytical technique and methodology, as well as the correct instrumental approach to be used to solve specific analytical problems proposed.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • participation in seminar
  • participation in discussions
  • individual study

Attendance: Not mandatory

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Seminar

Syllabus
The course gives some general information on the main painting techniques used in the centuries, focusing on the organic and inorganic materials used, their chemical composition and degradation due to natural and atrophic causes. Non invasive, non disctructive and microdistructive analytical techniques are described, (with particular attention to spettrocopies and spectrometries) with attention to instrumental requirements and set-ups, analytical protocols and comparison between the different information that can be obtained on the same material/sample by using different analytical approaches.
