Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of basic chemistry and general biochemistry. He or she will have acquired a theoretical background that covers the knowledge directly relevant biological phenomena that occur at the cellular level, with particular focus on chemical and biochemical events that determine, regulate and modulate physical activity. Lastly, the student completing the course will have learned the basic knowledge of biological macromolecules, the metabolic pathways of the cell and their integration and will possess the tools for understanding the metabolism of different tissues and organs.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exam, the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply.

Methods:

  • Final written exam

Syllabus
The course provides notions on Introductory Chemistry and Biochemistry. The first part of the course will develop general knowledge of basic Chemistry to facilitate the understanding of the vital phenomena that occur in living organisms. In this form will be provided the basic concepts of General Chemistry, such as Elementary atomic theory, Periodic Table, Chemical bonding, Stoichiometry, Gas low, Solubility, Acid-base chemistry; followed by basic concepts of Organic Chemistry, such as Carbon atom and hybridization, Functional groups and their reactivity. The second part of the course focuses on General Biochemistry. In this form will be provided the basic concepts about the structure and function of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates and the student will learn the major cellular metabolic pathways necessary for vital functions and for the maintenance of health.
