Knowledge
The student who completes the course will have the ability to read and understand scientific texts written in English to successfully address the Second Cycle studies. He/she also will acquire the basic vocabulary to face situations of everyday life and work in order to talk fluently with foreign colleagues. The student will also acquire the basic knowledge to prepare a power-point presentation in English language and to illustrate it in a work meeting. He/she will be able to provide arguments in support of his/her views, communicate on the phone, give and ask for informations and advices.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her ability to: 1) understand the main points of sentences regularly encountered in the work and school environment; 2) deal with most situations likely encountered whilst traveling in an area where the English language is spoken. 3) participate into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life; 4) understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters. 5) write a simple text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, as well as personal letters describing experiences and impressions.

Methods:

  • Final essay

Further information:
The final test is composed of three exercises. The maximum time to complete the test is 90 minutes. The minimum score to pass the test is 36 out of 60, equal to 60% of the total score. The texts deal with various topics of general interest. The language is typical of non-specialist periodicals and daily newspapers. The texts are in British or American English. Since this is a formal written English, the differences are very limited and do not interfere with understanding or performing the exercises. To carry out the exercises it is not needed to understand every single word of the text. The test is designed to verify the ability to understand and be able to interpret a text even in the absence of a complete language skill.
