VICO TRA BENJAMIN E FOUCAULT
Il corso intende rivisitare le considerazioni che Michel Foucault fece sul Che cos'è l'illumismo? di Kant, in particolare là dove egli contrappone questo scritto alle idee di storia contenute nel mito del Politico di Platone, nella Città di Dio di Agostino, nella Scienza Nuova di Vico. Foucault afferma che in Vico vi è una concezione della storia intesa come compimento. Ma nell’interpretazione che Foucault dà dello scritto di Kant, mentre si sottolinea la critica del presente in un autointerrogarsi storico sulla propria epoca, si perde di vista la questione del futuro e, di conseguenza, del rapporto tra futuro e passato. Al contrario, Walter Benjamin, soprattutto nelle Tesi sul concetto di storia, si pone proprio il problema del rapporto futuro-passato e nello stesso periodo in cui lavora alle Tesi fa riferimento alla Scienza Nuova di Vico nell’occasione della sua traduzioine parziale di uno scritto di Carl Gustav Jochmann. Fino a che punto una critica del presente quale Foucault vede nel Kant di Che cos’è l’illuminismo? può fare a meno del rapporto tra futuro e passato? In quali termini la storia si confronta con il futuro? E’ la domanda di Benjamin, il quale, in polemica con l’idea di storia come progresso, pone il problema del passato come riscatto, riparazione e redenzione, dopo che il futuro ha mandato in frantumi il presente.
VICO BETWEEN BENJAMIN AND FOUCAULT
The course aims to revisit the considerations that Michel Foucault made on Kant's What is the Enlightenment? In particular, where he confronts this writing with the ideas of history contained in the myth of Plato's Statesman, in the City of God by Augustine and in the New Science of Vico. Foucault states that Vico conceives history as a fulfillment, but in the interpretation that Foucault gives of Kant's writing, while stressing the critique of the present in a historical self-interrogation of his own age, the question of the future and, consequently, of the relationship between the future and the past, is lost. On the contrary, Walter Benjamin, above all in the Thesis on the concept of history, poses the problem of the future-past relationship and in the same period in which he works on the Theses, he quotes Vico's New Science on the occasion of a partial translation of a text of Carl Gusra Jochmann. A criticism of the present which Foucault sees in Kant's What is the Enlightenment?, can it be without the relationship between the future and the past? In what terms does history compare to the future? This is Benjamin's question which, contrary to the idea of history as progress, poses the problem of the past as redemption, reparation and redemption, after the future has shattered the present.
